  • Icy roads make for a slow dead day at work, right? Wrong!

So last week the winter storm has wreaked a little havoc down here in Texas. My manager kept all of us informed as to what was going on, and sure enough the theatre was going to open that day, but close early. The roads are very icy, and Texas drivers don't have too much experience driving under these conditions (some are actually brave enough to do doughnuts in empty parking lots ) but that doesn't stop them from going to the movies.
The first day we were open only half a day and there wasn't too many people, but certainly enough to call it busier than usual for a slow weekday.
The next day, there was quite a few people coming in to see movies, and I had the unfortunate task of having to work concession that day, so I didn't get a moment's rest. The power did go off 4 times before we opened, and alot of employees were praying that it'd go off just once more, because our manager said that if it did go off once more, and since it takes 10-30 minutes to reboot, we would close and go home. Yeah, I think yall can guess what happened.... Lucky us, the power stayed on. My boss wanted me to stay a little late because the other person taking my spot couldn't make it into work, go fig. We did close early again though.
The following day I was off, and I kept it that way because I didn't want to deal with mobs of customers again when we were technically supposed to be dead.
The whole time I kept thinking "How could these morons go out to the movies or anywhere else with the dangerous icy roads?" But just when I think the stupidity level of customers couldn't possibly get any higher, it always seems to surprise me. Yeah I know the kids are out of school and they're probably driving their parents bonkers, but still, there was just way too many people coming out to the movies.
I probably would bet money that the icy roads would make us as dead as a graveyard. Instead it had the exact opposite effect, and I realized then that if the roads had not iced over, the kids would be in school, the adults would be working, and we would be basically dead and slow.
The roads are back to normal now, so there shouldn't be any big crowds today. Good, because as we all know, customers, while they help pay our paychecks, also manage to make our lives miserable (a small percentage anyway).
Anyway I'm just amazed at all the idiots who just had to see a movie, regardless of the risk they were taking. It should have been dead at work last week, not freakin busy!
BTW to anyone here who does drive and go out under these road conditions for fun, please do not take offense to this story.

I can see where you're coming from on this. If I lived somewhere where conditions like that were considered hazardous, I'd be pretty annoyed about the whole thing too. I mean, why risk your safety for a movie ticket?

Having said that, I live in Canada. Icy roads are the norm a lot of the time and only truly horrific weather keeps us in during the winter. XD

        Exactly.

Hazardous conditions mean you go out for medication & staple foods only (but if you had any warning at all, you stocked up in advance).

OR you go out if you are an emergency worker, AND it's safe to do so. (Which may mean that the police-trained driver with the all-weather vehicle does a 'bus run' picking you and your peers up.)

During Cyclone Yasi, the folk of North Queensland were warned that between landfall and the far side of the major cyclonic winds, there would be NO RESPONSE from 000. They'd keep records of where they'd be needed once it was safe to go and respond again, but they would not be travelling even to emergency calls during the peak of the cyclone.

        1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
        2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I try to figure how they make it to my mall too! Oh, and of course the kids come with them because it's not SAFE for them to go to school!

Lets not forget the double standard. They won't risk going to work, but if you don't make it in and open the theater, they would be bitching a blue streak.

Unless you're a west coast wimp like me. I live on the south coast of BC and when we get more than about 2 cm of snow, we're crippled. I fear we're the laughingstock of the rest of the country.

You would think that, wouldn't you? The funny thing is though, whenever there is bad weather, my mother, who works in a pharmacy, always says how dead it is, meanwhile, I work in a convenience store and it is always busy. These stupid people won't dare go out for their medications, but will risk their lives for Dutch's and Cheetos.

I am considered 'emergency personnel' (why I still have not figured out, for criminey's sake I am just a 'Security Officer') so I have to be out in just about any kind of weather. I've made it in to work when they have all but put roadblocks on the roads to keep idiots like me from being on them. However, movies? No..I'll pass thanks. Not going to risk my life to watch a movie. Food (if absolutely needed), work (though I'd really rather not), and health (ie medicine, taking somebody to the hospital) sure..anything else? It can wait.

My friend the electrician is emergency personnel. He's trained to switch off power to a building that's on fire: so he has one of those yellow siren-and-lights things in his work truck. If there's any sign of active power, the firemen can't start fighting the fire until he (or one of his peers) gets there.

Of course, once the power is off his job is done - but his part is apparently crucial.

You'd think so. They probably got hundreds of dvds to choose from, they can order payperviews, they can even watch their favorite shows on demand, but that's obviously not enough for these idiots. We have maybe 10 movies to choose from, and yet these morons say there's nothing good to watch at home. But yet they find something good to watch at our theatre, which is worth the risk despite the road conditions.
To make matters worse, I had to tear tickets on these freezing days, and a few customers who thought they were being funny made witty remarks like "Oh, you must be cold standing there." No shithead, I'm burning up from idiots like you who try to be funny and make a joke out of my misery. You try standing by the entrance to our theatre for a few hours.
