  • Go ahead with that, see how that works for you

Okay, so I picked up a shift at the hotel of doom last weekend (while sick none the less, I hope Felafel appreciates what I do for him). This was Saturday night, I noticed that a guest had been overcharged for a room (she had been charged for three pets rather than two in the room... pets are allowed, but at an extra $10 per pet for cleaning). I go ahead and credit back $10 to her credit card. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, I get a call from coworker who has this guest (who checked out in the morning) on the phone screaming over the fraudulant $10 charge on her card and that she intended to contest it. My response, go ahead, tell her to contest it and see how it works out for her, she'll figure it out soon enough
Okay, so I'm sure coworker was much more polite than I was, but I would love to hear that conversation when she calls the credit card company to dispute the credit back

If your credit card processor is anything like ours, they'll take the money back from the original charge because the woman won't give them enough information to let them know she can't tell the difference between a charge and a refund. Then you'll have to call them and let them know that you refunded the $10 already, and that's what she saw and got upset about and then they'll check their records, figure out that the woman is stupid and give it back to you.

We just went through this. Although in our case, the customer didn't see that it had already been credited, they just contested the charge, because it was fraudulent, which we'd figured out a month ago.

My wife did something like that at the supermarket a few years ago. We usually go shopping together, but we do seperate orders. Things that are just for me, I pay for. Things that are just for her, she pays for. And things that are for the whole house... well, that gets kind of tricky.

We had just finished up and were walking away with our carts, and my wife was looking at her receipt. Then she said, "They charged me twice for something!"

I took a look at it, and sure enough, the cashier had double-scanned something she only bought one of. She must have caught it and voided it off, because there was a credit right after it for the same amount. Simple, right? Well, my wife just wasn't getting it.

"They charged me twice for that!"

"It looks like they accidentally double-scanned it, but if you look right below it, there's a credit for the same amount."

(Stares at the receipt blankly) "But it's on there twice!"

"Yeah, because they accidentally scanned it twice. But they caught it and voided it off."

(More blank staring.) "But it's on there twice!"

We went back and forth like this several more times, and she eventually accepted it and we went home. But she still didn't seem convinced, or like she got it. It was kind of like, "OK, whatever..."
