And then there's the situation where I work: A manager with a spine vs. a corporate without one.

You can probably guess who wins most of the time.
Mine too. For example we used to charge a restocking fee on certain electronic items that were prone to being "rented," but corporate backed down when people complained.

So now any time you get back a TV or a GPS or a camera that was pretty obviously used for a special event and then returned afterwards, you take it back no questions asked.

So after the Super Bowl, we got back many of the big-screen TVs we had sold in anticipation of the game.

Leafblowers and mowers in the summertime?

I hate the renters. I went to the outside garden center to look for something specific I needed to count and found not one, but three generators bought during the power outages from the ice storm. That makes me mad, because we can't sell them, we can't return them for credit, so we just eat that loss.

Once the accountants figure out that generators do not generate enough profit because of all the returns, they will have your store stop carrying generators. Then your customers will have to use candles, or a regular rental store.

In the meantime, make a nice display with all the returned generators so the same customers can see them during the next power outage, but not be able to buy rent them again.

We already did that with lawn mowers. Pretty much anything that uses gasoline or kerosene, once it's been used, we can't do much with it because of the fire hazard. We have a 90 day return policy, so that is the bulk of summertime, and the bulk of cold weather. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
