  • Woman threatens to call headquarters then complains about change

The other day on Uscan one woman had a few things, one of which included a package of romaine lettuce. The lettuce was $3.99, and she tells me that the price is wrong and she saw a sign for $1.49. So, I call someone from the produce department over to check the price for her. He checks it, tells me and her that $3.99 is the right price, and goes back. The woman is not happy with this, and says "Well they don't have it displayed correctly then. I'm going to tell headquarters about this!" Apparently my store is headquarters though, since she just asks me for the manager's name and store phone number. After this, she paid with a large bill so she got around $48 in change. The Uscans in my store only give customers singles and tens back as change since the change dispensers only have room for two bill cartridges and it is seperate from the bills that customers put in to pay. She says, "I didn't know this would give me all these singles! I don't want all these! They need to tell you that first! Give me a $5 bill!" I change 5 singles for a 5 dollar bill for her and finally she leaves.

On my break, I go over to the produce department to see what "sign" she was talking about. It turns out that only certain packages of that lettuce were reduced to $1.49 because they were a bit brown. Otherwise, there was nothing saying anything else there was $1.49.

I'm the girl that buys the slightly brown cheap lettuce in the winter and usually it is marked on the bag itself not the section - is that how it was marked in your store? I don't know where you live, but $3.99 for lettuce in January seems fairly resonable to me.
I grow way too much lettuce in my garden in the spring/fall so I'm usually fine with going the winter without it. hmmm... two more months and I'll be in salad heaven.

Yes, the $1.49 ones were marked with our reduced produce labels and the other one had no such label. And you're right Pepper... typical SC.

If one bag was marked $1.49, they all must be that price! But I'll take this nice green one instead of that yucky slightly-brown one!

See, I'm channeling an SC! Scary, isn't it?

The change bit...made my brain go blooey. Five single bills are too many? I mean, she only asked for one $5 bill, so...
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

At least she didn't throw the lettuce at your or the produce associate.

I view your U-scan's giving the gobs of singles as silent revenge for every time we've had to clean out a till to break a big bill.
