  • Cross Country Wallet Retrieval Unit a.k.a. Me

So at our returns desk we supervisors take turns throughout the week auditing. Essentially everything that comes in we have to scan and match up to a list that prints etc etc etc

Anywho this is about answering phones at the desk, When we aren't busy auditing (or when the desk clerks are more busy by comparasin) we will answer the phone which is usually general questions. Also its just easier if a sup is on a call if it gets out of hand anyway right?

I'm not going to label the customer as an SC since I think she was just frantic, and she was never once angry, so maybe Frantic Customer (FC ) works.

    Crazy scenario....

    *ring ring*
Me: <location and store name> information desk.
FC: Can I have a supervisor or manager please?
Me: Im a supervisor what can I help you with?
FC: O good. Ok....... So i received a phone call from *my store name* saying someone has a wallet for me.
Me: You lost your wallet and we have it?
FC: No no! someone has a wallet that belongs to my friend.
Me: Ok so *store name* has your friends wallet?
FC: No no no! someone has my friends wallet and they had your stores card in it and tried to contact your store who phoned me trying to find out who my friend is!
Me: Alright....so your saying that someone, who you dont know, has your friends wallet and tried contacting my store to get their information and we ended up calling you?
FC: Yes! I need to get in touch with the person who has the wallet.
Me: Alright..... A few things sound weird. If a person has your friends wallet and has our store card in it, we would be able to look up their information. How did they call you?
FC: O she was my roomate a year ago, they must not have updated her information. She lives in Ontario now!

note: this conversation is in Edmonton, Alberta......far far way

Me: In..... Ontario? And it was this location that called you? Because this doesn't sound like our way of tracking down individuals.
FC: No it was a 1-800 number that phones me!
Me: Ok so this is one of two things at this point.... based on the info your giving me. Since our stores don't have a 1-800 number for locations this may be someone else trying to get a hold of your friend OR its a store in Ontario with an area code close to 1-800. I would recommend only dealing with that number.
    FC: You cant help me?
Me: Ma'am, from what your saying *my store* doesn't even have the wallet. An unknown individual who may be across the country has it. The owner of the wallet doesn't live in this province and we don't know which store if any, contacted you. The only way for this issue to be resolved is to work through who contacted you.
    FC: Alright....that makes sense. Thanks!

    *click*

One of the desk girls was laughing listening to only one side of the conversation..... oye vey
Fan? This is shit. Shit? Meet fan.

Ummm....Hm...Ok. Maybe I could see an employee attempting to help the wallet finder by contacting the person the store card was registered to, cause I can't see them giving a stranger that information, so that would be going above and beyond.

Nice that they're attempting to get the wallet returned.

If it's a specific issue like that that is only relevant to a single location, why in heaven's name would you call a general line and not just call the one provided by the original caller?

I've done this. When I worked at Hardee's, a woman left her purse behind. No cell phone or other contact details, but I found a Blockbuster card. So I called Blockbuster and asked if they could contact their customer to tell her we had her purse. Blockbuster just gave me her phone number and I called her directly. Turned out okay though and she was glad to get her purse back.

We used to find or get people reporting lost wallets or cell phones at my work all the time. We could look up customers accounts and contact them but would never give out there personal info. Glad it turned out okay though.
