  • I don't think you know what 'false advertising' means

To give a little background history about the shop: We're not a big shop but we've sold just about everything. Chocolate, toys, clothing, gardening supplies, stationary, furniture, flamingos, pre-stained underwear, etc. I know the brands by now (FYI: Never trust electronics from discount stores. NEVER.), and we get some really fun regulars. But it works both ways. We get some crazies too.

    But the sign says...

Every now and again we'll get in large stacks of chocolate bars or a popular sweet when the brand's being replaced with fancy new packages. Last this happened, chocolate bars were $1 each and the mints were on a seperate shelf as 3 for $2.

A customer brings some chocolate bars to the counter. Common purchase, didn't really notice much about him at that point.
    Me: "That'll be $3 please."
Customer then hands me a note, so it's all typical here's your change, receipt with a smile, thank you's. He stands there for a moment, odd look on his face. Maybe he's turning something on inside?
    SC: "Aren't they 3 for $2?"
Me: "No, I'm sorry, the mints are 3 for $2 though."
SC: "The sign over there says they're 3 for $2!!"
Me: "I'm sorry, the chocolate bars aren't part of--"
He turns around and storms off towards the sign. To his shock and horror: the sign was on the shelf with the mints, with the product and price clearly labelled, and nowhere near the chocolate bars. He storms back to me.
    SC: "THAT'S FALSE ADVERTISING!!!"
    Me: "Uh... It--"
SC: "I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!"
Me: "Okay, we'll just need you to put your name and number on the back of the recei--"
SC: "FORGET ABOUT THAT S***! I WANT MY MONEY BACK!"
    Me: "It's store policy, I-"
SC: "I'M NOT DOING THAT S***! IT'S FALSE ADVERTISING AND I WANT MY G** D*** MONEY BACK!"
Ended up giving it back. He stayed there shouting, made it clear he wasn't going anywhere, it wasn't worth my time, and it didn't help he was 5 times my size. On the bright side, he hasn't been back since. UGH.

    It's not $2?

Customer puts a large toy til on the counter. It has an A4 price ticket on it, as most of our big items do. I remove the ticket and scan it.
    Me: "That one's $19.95 please."
    C: "What?! Isn't this the $2 shop?"
Me: "No, I'm afraid there's never been a $2 shop here."
You... it's... I... we... they... ...... I don't know. This conversation is so common. So, so common.

    Do you have...

C: "You know that doghouse you have on display?"
    Me: "I... uh...... what? Yeah.."
Gah, I can't make my way around her!
C: "Is that your last one, or...?"
Me: " ...... I think it might be, yeah."
C: "Are you able to see if there's one out the back? I want to buy one, but *Insert short life story here. I wasn't really listening.*"
    Me: "Uh....."
C: "Oh, it's alright, I'd better get back to work, I'll look later. Bye!"
    She leaves the bathroom.

The need to show off newfound skills.

Customer places two pairs of goggles on the counter.
Me: "It'll be $5 for those please."
C: "Two and two is four."
I look at the til again, and sure enough, it says $5. He points to the product. The thing is priced wrong.
Me: "They scanned at $2.50 each, I'll just mark it down for you."
    C:
You'd better put those goggles on now. One more comment and you may be jumping in the pool to put out a fire.

    Apparantly it's the LAW.

Of all the horrible customers I've had, this one was the worst of all and it'll just boil my blood, but I need a vent nevertheless.
There's a TV show down I used to watch. The kind of show that spies on tradesmen and points out the good bits and bad bits. Now, though, it just complains even when they do things right.
It had an episode on rounding (our smallest coin is 10c). Some stores round down from 9c, but most stores have a standard 5c mark for rounding. Our store goes up from 5c. Said show mentioned ONCE that there are no laws on how cash is rounded. You CAN legally round up from 1c if you want to.
Anyway, we had one customer who was psychotic, to put it nicely. He was adamant that the show had claimed rounding up from 5c was illegal. I didn't curse at him, I wasn't rude, I just told him that I couldn't change the tills and I'd seen the show and we weren't doing anything illegal. He ended up calling my bosses to complain about me. I didn't get in trouble or told off for that (I had witnesses) - my bosses aren't idiots and they don't like being abused either.

It was a couple of weeks later when a woman came in and said it was illegal to round up from 5c. She wasn't a psychopath about it, but the look on her face and smug tone of voice suggested it was his probably wife or some relation. I don't know if they were up to something but if I see either of them again, I don't know how I'll restrain myself this time.

This one happened nearly a full year ago.

Psychic: "I can tell when people are pregnant."
    Me: "Wow, really?"
P: "Yep!" He looks around, leans in close to me, and says, "You'll be pregnant two years from now!"
    Me:
P: "And it's going to be a boy!"
    Me: "You spoiled the surprise!"
    He winks and walks out.

    This guy's a regular. I don't care if he's lying, he's a really fun guy and he's always lifting your spirits. :]

Mum: "He didn't say anything about getting married first?!?!"
