  • More fun on Chat

So a bunch of kids are using chat to ask us librarians questions, like:

-Where can I find websites on Weed!
-I need to know how to have sex, it's for a project.
-I need a website about prostitutes.

Then there is this question I am working on:
Question: Chat Transcript: Do you have information regarding popular songs from the Revolutionary War ?
Xxxxx PL: Note: Patron's screen name: Karl.
Xxxxx PL: Librarian 'Xxxxx PL DMFan' has joined the session.
Xxxxx PL: Hello and welcome. My name is DMFan and I am a librarian in Xxxxx. Our libraries share this chat service. Please let me read your question.
Xxxxx PL: You just need a list of a few song titles from that era?
Karl: Do you have a list of songs composed by soldiers from France ?
Xxxxx PL: during the French Revolution?
Xxxxx PL: or the American Revolution?
Karl: I'm looking for information about the soldiers in the American Revolutionary War ?

    1) This is a long freaking question, no way can it be answered today 2)looks like someone's homework assignment 3) could you not have been more confusing? First, I thought you meant American revolution, then you mention the French, so I thouth you meant the French Revolution. But no, you mean the American Revolution.

    Now his question is:
Karl: Do you have information regarding the NPR website?

ah, some idiots don't have their questions picked up (maybe we are ignoring you?) and are reposting:

-how do you have sex? Its for a project
    -prostitutes and the constituion?
-how do you have sex? I need a video.
    -what is the clitoris?

Another chat question I picked up:
Question: Chat Transcript: who was al capone?

Xxxxx PL: Note: Patron's screen name: abby
Xxxxx PL: Librarian Xxxxx PL DMfan has joined the session.
Xxxxx PL: Hello and welcome. My name is DMFan and I am a librarian in Xxxxx. Our libraries share this chat service. Please let me read your question.
abby: HEYYY what sup LIL DMFannnnnnn
Xxxxx PL: Here's the link to the wikipedia article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_capone
abby: can i have a diffrent site my teacher doesnt let me use this
    Xxxxx PL: One moment
    abby: ok
Xxxxx PL: http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/g...e/index_1.html this is from the trutv website, from their crime library.
abby: omg thanks alot DMFan i love you you are my best friend ever haha jk i hate your name so much but thanks for the info
    abby: </3
    abby:

-how you have sex. Me and my girlfriend know.

I'm working on this question, which seems kind of fun for me:

I'm kinda curious, what are the library policies on dealing with kids getting you to do their home work?

Oh, and are you allowed to just ignore the blatantly inappropriate?

As for the question you are working on:
Though I haven't read them, the books the True Blood series is based on I BELIEVE has at least some focus on discrimination vs vampires. I know that different countries react differently to the reveal that vampires exist, including baring them certain rights/citizenship all together.

I don't think we really have a policy in chat for doing homework. We do have a script for unappropriate questions, but I figure the kids want attention so even if I engage in chat with them to tell them it was inappropriate, they got what they wanted, attention.

But in house, the un-written policy is "don't get someone to complain" as in, kid/parent wants us to do the work, we say "no", parent will complain that we didn't help and the manager or supervisor will say, "There was a complaint about you not helping. We can't tell the parent how to parent (if we say "we're not going to do the homework for you'), so just do the best you can." Yes, very vague and it can change depending what manager/supervisor feels like doing.

About the vampire discrimination quesiton; I did suggest Interview with the Vampire (Louis and Claudia v. the Parisian vampires) and also the first Sookie Stackhouse book. I first asked the person if they wanted young adult or adult books, but she didn't respond, but I figued if she wanted 200-paged books, it must be a teen. I told her at one point "I guess you are 14. I'm going to suggest Dead before Dark, but it might be a little adult for you." The kid responded that she was 14.

Absolutely it covers discrimination against vampires, and werewolves and other forms of supernatural beings.

wow, i miss the days where libraries were quiet places to read, research and experience some relaxation.

now the library has to provide entertainment, answer questions easily found on google and do everyone's tasks for them.

i'm glad i decided not to be a librarian; i'd become homicidal too quickly.

I was also thinking the Anita Blake series, but I havn't read one for a long time, so might not be right about the discrimination. I only read the first book. Even the people who like Zombie walks and participate in homemade horror movies (or independent movies, I'm not sure) think the latter Anita Blake books are f&*!ed up. Like were-sex. The first one I thought was partly good but really weird.

Don't get me started on that series. I used to like them until they changed from fantasy horror to romance horror(?) and became all about the main character's personal relationships. Which...just...gah.

I wanted gory detective work, not badly written sex scenes!

Is there any supernatural being Anita hasn't had sex with?? And, you're right. The sex scenes are badly written. They makes me want to gag.

Oh dear, the Anita Blake sex scenes. Never read an author before that could spend a hundred pages setting up exactly who's going to have sex with who and in what way...before the sex even starts!

It sort of sounds like she's supposed to read a book with a story that deals with discrimination, probably for a book report or discussion.

Being 14, she doesn't want to read anything without vampires in it, so she's trying to combine the two. Kind of creative, really.

I'm not used to people being creative. Most people want to be spoon-fed an idea. Hopefully she finds something.

I also told her to go to amazon.com and type in "vampire discrimination". WE didn't find anything exactly like that, though I did see some books that seemed interresting, so I read the reviews hoping to find something we can use. One was for Vampire Angel. I thought, "well, if there is going to be discriminitation, this probably will fit it," but the reviews made it sound like bad fanfic.

A different topic. The chat service we have covers not only our library but other library systems. Sometimes we get someone asking "why isn't my card working?" when it is some other system. No way for us to know, since we can't get into other library systems records. Could be because of fines, no way for us to know. People don't like being told, "you have to call your local library," because "I don't want to wait on hold."

She's got a major Mary Sue problem. Blake's relationships echo the author's relationship troubles, from what I've heard. Which is a shame, since the first couple of books are pretty good.

As ar s vampires and discrimination, damn can't think of any really since the one Mercy Thompson book with semi-overt discrimination (against the fae) didn't contain Stefan and is a little bit above a 14 year old's level.

pisses me off that taxes are being used to help some lazy little shit avoid doing their own homework and that policy allows this to continue. it's not telling the parents how to raise their children, it's about preventing academic fraud-allowing someone to pass off work they didn't fully do themselves. helping with research or getting direction/ideas. sure; expecting someone to all the research and work for them? hell no; get off your lazy ass and do it yourself. mom and dad don't like it? tough; teach your child resposibility and honesty and there won't be a problem to complain about.

Nothing to contribute, just had to agree. The last Anita Blake book I was suckered into reading, I figured if someone had taken out all the sex the book would have been 10 pages long.

I've heard the most recent one (or two?) were better. "Anita's back," said my friend, but I haven't the heart to check for myself.
