i don't mind cheap places usually. i've actually told travel agents the only thing i require for a hotel room is a bed, phone, and functioning crapper [in those terms!].

face it, if you're on a vacation, or in my case, at the time, a traveling photographer, where you spend most of your time OUT of the room working or sight seeing, WHY spend ridiculous amounts of money for a bunch of frills you're not gonna be using? as long as the bed is comfy, the toilet works and you can call for some take out, what on earth do you really NEED?

but as always, to each their own.

Sure I can! The extended stay hotel five miles away has $79 a night! Want their number ?!?! They have internet and ROACHES FOR FREE!! (I love when potential cheapos call because I can be rude to them without being written up
Potential cheapos? You don't even know for sure what their financial situation is? And you brag about being that rude to them?

While I totally understand where you're coming from on this, let's look at another perspective. I work at home for my family's company, and since I'm home all the time, I'm expected to be chief cook, laundress, maid, bottlewasher, etc. as well as working 40 - 50 hours per week. On those RARE occasions I get to travel, I want someone to take care of ME. I will gladly pay for the frills and services ... even if I don't use them, I want to know I "can"

But as you said, to each his/her own.

As soon as you saw her pocketbook, why didn't you go after her? Or put it in the safe?

You don't understand, hauntedheadnc. I wasn't referring to killing them with kindness while being a janitor. Kindness to consumers only gets you hurt, in more ways than one.

I meant 'kill them with kindness' when I'm shopping, or dining in a restaraunt, or something like that. My behavior when I'm the customer.

Good part is that she left her pocketbook at the counter. I could’ve said something but I wouldn’t. She came back, ranting that we stole her pocketbook the next day, I heard. It was returned, I think, with some stuff missing. :P
My thought is that it could have been a scam. She left it on purpose, then claimed stuff was missing when she got it back.

Mrs. TGK's ex, tried a scam like that. The manager pointed out the 'not responsible' sign. Nice try.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Hey guys, before we pounce on the OP for "stealing" items, there's some info that we don't know. We don't know if the items were even stolen. They could have been left in a cab, strewn all over the sidewalk somewhere, or not even present to begin with. You'd be surprised at the kind of things that "disappear" when people get drunk out of their minds. Hell, some of them would lose their *heads* if they weren't attached. Also, the OP didn't mention who actually turned the item in--it could have easily been rifled through after being dumped on the sidewalk. There's just too much to mention.

Drunk people lose there stuff and will swear up and down it was "stolen". My ex cashed his paycheck then went to a bar and got stinking drunk. When he got home he hid the money for some odd reason. Could not remember where he put it and swore I took it. We both worked so I had my own money but it was easier to blame me than admit he lost it. Imagine my suprise when a month later I picked up some empty boxes stacked by the back door to put away the Christmas decorations (yep, he lost the money we going to use to buy the kids presents) to find he had put the cash under the boxes.

On another note, I never knew I could check into discounts at hotels. I just assumed the price quoted was what you paid. Of course I would politely ask if the were any deals available and if the answer is no, accept it and pay w/ a smile and a thank you.

Our rates are higher during the week usually around $149-$179 and we drop down to $89-$109 during the weekend depending on how busy we are and what's going on in the area. We are also considered the "upscale" hotel in the area. And we no longer accept reservations from line of price or obits.com. We get the whole "oh I was able to book cheaper online", "yu guys are too expensive for me, throw in a free breakfast voucher and I'll stay there" or the "can I get a discount?". The answers to the last two are no. The answer to the first one is we no longer accept reservations from those websites due to issues in the past.

MGMT no longer allows us to discount unless they approve it. (former co-irker gave away a $169 room for $109 on a night that we were 2 rooms shy of being sold out and had people calling us every few minutes looking for a room.
