Sheldon, are you feeling OK? Yours was the next post after this, and you didn't comment on it.

Never understood that last, until it finally hit me that "hazerim" (swine) is one letter away from "haverim" (friends).
      Pigs are friends, not food!

I always assumed that 'red meat' meant mammal meat. Beef, mutton, pork, etc. People who said they didn't eat red meat would eat poultry or fish.

(Actually, when I was very little I thought 'red meant' meant meat that was cooked rare. )

He was scratching his head trying to figure out what the hell that was, not recognizing the second word as standard Hebrew, until he realized . . . it said "B'sar Oink". As he put it, the guy was selling "oink meat". The term "b'sar lavan" for "white meat" apparently hadn't yet come into use that early.
Oink meat! I'm so gonna steal that! I'd say creative way to get around food taboos.

In medieval times duck was considered OK to eat on fasting days, it lives in/on water, right? Not that it mattered much for the peasantry and the serfs, they rarely got meat anyway. During that time pork was considered much more valuable than beef. Pork has a higher fat and thus energy content, cows were used as draught animals and for milking. To fatten a swine you need basically left overs from the tables, that was possible even for poorer people. Even in towns people had swines. Smelly...
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.

However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Yeah, as I was writing my PP, I was thinking "Sheldon's gonna have a field day with this."
          Don't wanna; not gonna.

I believe the one to ask would be Ursula Vernon (ursulav.deviantart.com), as she's the one who drew the pear in the first place. (More weird fruit here: weird fruit gallery)

I have it on good authority that cows and goats were kept in/near central London at least up until the mid-19th century. Eventually they worked out how to move fresh milk around rapidly by rail.
