  • Uh, no...

Two incidents stand out in my mind today...

    The First
I had a guy buy a small cartload of groceries, and tried to pay with a check. Now, I say tried, because, when I ran the check, it came back with a "decline, returned check", so I call floor manager ... (let's call her 'Hole in the Ground', this is the manager who yelled at me for going to the closer's UScan that one time... after I was specifically told not to ask if I'm closing, and to just take over for that UScan) and she immediately starts berating me for not having some printed slip from the denial.
J: There wasn't a slip of any sort, I have no clue what you're talking about, it just said there was a returned check on this account...
HitG: There needs to be a slip that prints out when checks get declined.
    J: I've never seen one.
Customer comes up behind us... "What's going on? I'm in a bit of a rush to pick up my kids."
HitG: "The system declined your check, and that's all I know..." *glares at me*
    J:
SC: "I don't know the other person on the account very well..." and that's all I understood as he ran out the door.
Yeah, not knowing the other person on your checking account isn't wise just on the face of it.
I actually decided to suspend the order, just in case he came back afterward, and called Ex Bitch over to tell her the story, and she went, "Slip? Oh, the one that prints on the registers? Doesn't happen here, you just get an error message..." she ran the suspended order just to see, and promptly tore up the check, and took the cold stuff from the order. "He's not coming back."
    J: If you say so...

    The Second
Running the other bank of UScans, I happen to look out the door while there's no greeter, and two girls are walking tiny little purse dogs into the store on rope leashes. I guess the one girl noticed my look, cause she asked, "Do you allow dogs in here?"
    Do we look like PetSmart?
J: "No, seeing as there's food, we don't allow dogs in here," unless they're service dogs, of course.
She hands her dog to the other girl, who opts to just stand outside watching the dogs while her cohort shops...
    REALLY?
    "I call murder on that!"

Well, at least they get points for keeping the dogs outside and not trying to fight with you over it.

I gotta say I was surprised about the girls with the dogs. I figured one of two things would have happened: They would try to sneak them in, or they'd claim the dogs were service animals because Moofy and Mr. Sprinkles, like, totally help them pick out cereal, or something.

Actually, there is no requirement that service animals be marked in any manner, so refusing entry based on lack of a vest can land a company in some nasty legal trouble.

Ah, see, I wouldn't have known that... however, the fact that she didn't try to tell me they were service animals when she asked if they were allowed in kind of lead me to believe they were just pets.

Besides, who in their right mind picks one of those fireplace-ornament-sized things as a service animal? I mean, sure, they're cute and all if you're into them but if it were me, I'd take a service animal people wouldn't accidentally step on, you know?

My partner has a service chihuahua to help with her anxiety disorder. Yes, I'm serious. She carries the paperwork around with her in case anyone questions her about it.

The smaller dogs are actually more useful for some types of ailments that are more sensory-based as opposed to leading. For instance, a hearing-aid dog could be any size at all, and a small one might be more convenient in a lot of situations. Vision-aid dogs have to be larger due to the logistics of guiding human charges and being capable of bringing a moving person to a stop quickly, if necessary.

I think I've heard of stroke dogs and other animals like snakes, as well.
