  • "That's not a standard pillow"

I work at a department store in the home area, where we sell among other things, pillows. This woman comes in with her son heading to college looking for pillows. I direct her towards some of the cheaper pillows because it's not worth spending the money on a high quality pillow that will more than likely have vomit on it within 6 months. Mom insists on getting a down pillow. I show her where they are and let her know if she has any questions to ask. She asks where are the standard/queen pillows. I show her where some are and the options. The one she wanted was on the top. I see the son climbing the latter that is clearly marked associates only. I politely ask them if they could get down because it's a safety risk having a customer climb a ladder. She claims that she had him do it because no one was standing around holding their hands. She thinks that I am being rude by asking him to get off. I get them the pillow. She then proceeds to complain about how expensive the down pillow is. At this point, using any logic that natural ingredients plus high quality cotton is going to make a pillow more expensive isn't going to work. I've helped her before and she struck me as the type that thinks everyone who works in retail is a complete idiot and someone is convinced that she is intelligent, which manifests itself as stubbornness in her case. That's not true because you have to be intelligent to work in retail and deal with the morons like her on a daily basis. I remember her being an obnoxious coupon whore and her difficultly in understanding that multiple coupons will not work on the same transaction. My employer is notorious for the number of coupons that it has circulating at one time, so some customers understandably get confused.

I check her out and think this is the end of this. She's upset at how much the pillow is even with 20% off. They then ask if we have any twin XL sheets for dorm beds. I tell her not now, but we will later in the summer closer to when school starts. I tell her at this point if she wants to get them now her options are to order them through the housing association or to order them online. I know from personal experience that the only stores that carry them year round are Bed Bath and Beyond and the nearest one is 3 hours away. I tell her they are a seasonal item and she doesn't seem to understand that. We did have one in stock but it had pink stripes. I thought about showing it to them after they left out of pure spite because her son seemed like the very masculine type.

She said she thought I was rude for trying to patiently answer her questions. I don't think I was rude. I explained everything to her as calmly as I could. It wasn't my fault she has a permanent bitch attitude.

I also am dreading customers complaining about the increase in sheet prices due to cotton. This week I marked up some of the lower quality sheets almost 20%. I can't do anything about it.

Not answering the question the way an SC wants=rude.

Also: Not breaking your spine bending over backwards to get the customer something they want, even if you've never supplied it = rude.

That's interesting to know. It's my understanding that "Twin XL" is 39x80 (the same size as a box spring for a King). That's also a fairly standard size for (believe it or not) the mattresses in truck sleepers. Sheet sets sold through truck sources tend to be overpriced and poor quality (20% cotton/80% polyester), so I always try to get "Twin XL" through normal bedding supply places.

After "back to school", if you've got a bunch of "Twin XL" sets left, you might want to suggest to your manager that he should ask to post on the bulletin boards in driver's lounges of any OTR trucking companies based nearby before marking them down for clearance. Might be able to sell them at regular price after all.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

wow, for being so 'intelligent,' she sure has issues with understanding simple concepts. sure it's not savantism with coupons instead of intelligence?

Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

She claimed that four of her kids went to college. I have to wonder if they got in on their own academic merit or via affirmative action for academically challenged white males aka athletic scholarships. The apple didn't seem to fall too far from the tree, so I'm thinking the latter.

Today was better. I was complemented by one customer for doing a phone order for a wedding gift that we didn't have in the store.

With this current promotion, most everything is at least 20% off with the use of a store credit card. Sales have been decent but that extra 5% off is really hurting sales. Most customers have been using their store card, which makes the couple who had big sales and coupon or store card very welcome.

I can relate to your pains regarding the higher prices. I work at a fast food joint and whenever the company decides to jack up the prices 10 cents I have to hear, "what happened? Did you change the price"? After the 20th SC I wanna snap and shout "YES!! YES I CHANGED THE PRICE BECAUSE I SECRETLY HATE YOU FOR NO REASON IN PARTICULAR! YOU FOUND ME OUT!"

Just curious, why is cotton causing the prices to rise? Is there a shortage I haven't heard about?

Oh hell yes. Started over a year ago when Pakistan suffered earthquakes and floods. Destroyed most of their cotton crops. Prices started to go up last year and they're continuing to do so. And I guess climate-change factors probably don't help.

I think that was a little over a year ago, and I remember having to start changing the prices on the cotton socks/pants etc from around last September. I think our company tried to hold off the price increases for quite a while, but eventually they just couldn't. I get frequent complaints about the increase in prices. The vast majority of people seem to have completely forgotten about Pakistan around here. I always mention "Well, the problems Pakistan had last year means their cotton crops were destroyed and cost of cotton has just gone up" but they always sort of grumble...they knew they can't really argue with that logic, but they're still not happy about it.

I also get people complaining about how our prices our going up across the full range of products we sell. "Pea-Hens [not our real name] used to be so cheap" they say. "Why is it going up?" I explain the cotton thing for an example. Then they say "Well New Look hasn't gone up any! They have some things in there that are cheaper than yours!" Some of their shit-quality camis are cheaper than ours, but for the most part what they sell costs more, and not necessarily at better quality. I just think they want me to do something to make us as cheap as Primark, but I can't make the cotton grow again

The shortage is coming. Bad harvests in Asia and the Deep South last year. There aren't a lot of places in the world that can really grow cotton, and when bad weather hurts the harvest, prices go way, way up.

Really sucks for me: I can't stand the feel of anything that isn't at least a cotton blend on my skin. Fortunately, I take good care of my clothing so it lasts awhile.

Unfortunately, I've been losing weight. In another six months I'm going to need to buy new clothes.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

The flooding down in the Southeastern US and rerouting the Mississippi isn't going to help the price of cotton go down too.

Also, coffee is another product that is going up in price. A coworker and I marked up all of the Keurig K Cups 10% this weekend. I don't get the appeal of them or the Keurig machines because I drink a pot of coffee at a time and buy good coffee. They're also expensive and I don't need another thing sitting on my counter. I have noticed coffee prices going up because the place I order online from has raised their prices a couple dollars over the last 6 months.
