  • Proof positive that SC's really do read signs

they just fail to comprehend them.

BG: My hotel faces a busy street. Right behind us is a Motel 6 that has much lower rates than ours. They advertise their rates on a sign that's right next to the street, ergo right next to my hotel.

    I check the SC in.

SC: How much did you put on my card?
    Me: $89.87
SC: Why so much? I thought it was $34.99
Me: That's for the Motel 6 behind us
SC: But why do you have the sign out there?
    Me: That's not our sign
SC: It's fucked up that you would have that sign out there.
Me: We have no control over where Motel 6 decides to advertise their prices.
    SC: Well that's deceiving!

No, dumbass, it's not deceiving. On the wall at the front desk is a huge sign saying we're Stockpot Inn. The sign out there was advertising Motel 6's prices. Since when did you read the name Stockpot Inn and think it was Motel 6?
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

I think SC's can read but choose not to....unless it says "free", "sale" or "cheap"

It's kind of like "selective hearing loss." Only it's "selective reading comprehension." They only understand the parts of the signs that they want to and ignore the rest.
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

Oh, they can read "free" just fine. Anything else, no. Like the part that says "no phone calls." That part might as well be invisible. That's why all day long, I (and my coworkers) have to keep saying "I'm sorry, we don't take the free ads over the phone, please go to our website or send those in the regular mail....etc etc etc"

EVERY ONE of the promo ads lays all this out in plain language. But all they see is "free".
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
