(I've been assuming this is a debit card we're talking about? If it was a credit, the held funds shouldn't matter unless you were that close to your credit limit that the hold would put you over.)

I'm talking credit card. Now imagine your line is say 1000. And you swipe at the pump 4 times this week. 2 auth 100, 1 does 125 and the last 76. That is $401 just sitting in limbo. Now add the lets say $30 each that you actually pumped for another $120 tying up $521 or more than half your credit line. now does it matter?
