  • A 12 year old has more sense!!!

Reminder-don't talk bad about pageants and get my post put in Fratching

I had a lady place an order for a dress, gave the the colors and style she wanted. We worked out a design for it and everything was good. Until I ordered everything and purchased the fabric and she decided she wanted something pretty much completely the opposite of what we discussed She originally ordered a cupcake style dress in purple and white with off shoulder straps and a snap back. With mostly a flower type theme for the stoning. Two days after I hunt down the perfect trims and appliques and get the stones ordered she decides she wants a babydoll style dress instead because her daughters pageant coach said she thinks a babydoll would be better for the pageant she is ordering it for. And she wants a halter strap now with laceup back. Add that to the fact that her coach thinks her two year old would look horrible in the purple she likes and wants her to change the color to turquoise instead Oh and we can't forget that instead of flowers she wants butterflies now

Luckily I had not started so I exchanged the fabric with no problems. The ladies at the fabric store know how my customers are so even though I have made multiple exchanges and returns they don't give me a problem. The appliques and trim I got for her dress can be used on something else and the stones I ordered can be used on her new design. Thank goodness she did not decide to use Crystal clear instead of Crystal AB swarovskis instead, knock on wood. I let her know I got everything I needed and that I cannot make any more changes because I have already cut the material for her new one and cannot exchange anything now. Now she thinks she is gonna get her dress sooner because I have started cutting it. I only cut it so that I could not exchange it and deal with her changing her mind anymore, doesn't mean I am gonna start sewing it until I get this other order finished like I already told her. You would think if you are paying this much for a dress for one pageant that you would check details with your daughters coach first before placing the order

Where does the 12 year old come in you ask? The same day this lady placed her order I got a call from someone local wanting to know if I could do a dress for her 12 year old. Now, I draw out my own patterns according to measurements for the little dresses and have not attempted a long gown. I told her this and she said she would come to the store with me and purchase the fabric and if I messed anything up or could not do it that was fine. I agreed I would only charge her for the work if it actually turned out OK. So I head to the store with my kids to meet her. Everything she picked out or told me to do with the dress her 12 year old was like NO! So I am thinking great, not only am I trying something out of my comfort zone since I have not done it before I have to deal with the 12 year old and her mom arguing. The mom gives up and tells the 12 year old, you walk around with her and tell her what you want and I will just stay out of it. The girl walks around a minute and goes straight to a couple of fabrics she likes (which I liked better then what her mom picked out too ) Then we head over to the pattern books. I tell her I don't use a pattern but if she can show me what she wants I can come up with something like it. She flips through the books while I wander around with the kids looking for some things I need (the appliques for the lady above matter of fact.) She finds me and has several books spread open. She says she wants this type skirt, this type bodice with this type sash, and this type straps, and a laceup back with a panel. She had found 4 different dresses that she liked one thing on and combined them. I had a notebook with me so I drew it out with the combo she liked and she said it was perfect. Then I let her draw out a design for the bodice.

I got home and started cutting. I cut and sewed and it actually started turning out pretty good. I called her mom and told her to come to my house for a fitting before I started the hem finish on the skirt and to see if I needed to make any alterations before I started stoning it. It was a perfect fit!!! and the best part was the little squeal she let out when we got it on her and she saw how it looked!!! She said it was absolutely perfect and her dream dress that she had saw in her head but could not find from a designer online. And I don't even have the stoning on it yet So now I know I can do a long one and she gets her dream dress. And with it being lace up she will be able to wear it for a while. For 12 years old she was actually one of the easiest customers I have worked with.

Does it feel good to make someone so happy?

It does feel good It is such a rarity to get someone that doesn't complain about everything and knows what they want the first time. And I love your sig. I have told cashiers that myself. Someone in front of me will be complaining and use that line and when they are walking away but still in earshot I tell the cashier I think whoever invented the saying the customer is always right was just a bad customer trying to justify their suckiness. I have gotten a few looks from the evil customer and a laugh from the cashiers, lol.

You know, it sound like that 12-year-old has an eye for design herself. It's rather unusual to be able to look at 4 different dresses, like one element of each, and pull all those different elements together into something that looks great. Very often that doesn't work at all.

Well, I'm impressed anyway. Me and sewing machines do NOT get along, and I have trouble pulling an OUTFIT together from my closet, never mind creating one.

pageantamomma, do you have a website where I could see your dresses? They sound absolutely gorgeous!

And I hope that 12-year old won "Best Dressed" in her pageant!

She does have an eye for design, I told her I was going to start selling that style and name it after her Her pageant is next weekend so I am crossing my fingers she gets best dressed because I think will make her feel more good about it since she is the one that designed it.

And I do have a facebook page. Not all of the dresses are on there since a lot of moms do not want their daughters dresses to be copied. That is why at most bigger pageants cameras are not allowed in the ball room. I have witnessed a fight over a mom trying to snap a cell phone pic of some girls dress so if they request not to put a pic of it, I don't. I don't want them coming to my house to get me, lol. I will be posting a pic of the 12 year olds dress after I am finished hemming it and I get some good stage shots of it from her mom

Nifty! I somehow imagine her doing those online doll dressups, those help with piecing out designs... and has a natural inclination towards it! I'm just happy her mom let her do that.

Looking at your Facebook photos reminds me of earlier this week doing some bookkeeping.

$129 purchase from some online dress shop for younger girls. Looked like formal gowns, but they were HIDEOUS. Bright, almost neon colors, poorly fitted on the models, and looked dead cheap. Like a $20 Party City costume.

Your work is amazing. Cute and detailed and that little cowgirl one with all the fringe just makes me want to hug puppies.

I've done work for little kids with better design sense than adults. Two of my cutest little Loonakit plushes ever were designed by 6 and 8 year old sisters. Some children really do have more sense than many adults.

So will she become your new intern, if she doesn't do well in her pageant? Sounds like the talent is there.

Thank you I really wish I had a better camera and a few mannequins or something better to model them. My daughter is too big or small for some of them and they don't look as good on a hanger. And as you can see from my pics and stage shots there is a big difference when you get a better quality pic. I have a picture of the purple babydoll with lace hanging on a hanger and then you see the stage shot of the girl wearing it and it does not even look like the same dress.

It's always funny when the kid is more competent to choose a product than the parent.
And despite my opinion on some of these pagents, I have much respect for designers such as yourself who makes tasteful, beautiful clothing for the kids as you've described

Those dresses are breathtaking! They almost make me want to put my daughter in a pageant so she has an excuse to wear something that amazing!
Wonderful details, and everything is so perfectly cut, hemmed, etc--very professional. You must have such a steady hand.

I should think she deserves extra points for that. Is there anywhere on the entry forms for the name of the designer, or some other way within the pageant's rules of letting the judges know that it's her own design?

Thank you so much for the compliment I actually am a huge klutz and have ADHD which normally does not let me concentrate on anything for too long. For some reason when it comes to sewing and stoning and decorating dresses I have an incredibly steady hand and can sit and glue those tiny stones on for hours. It is like medication to me, lol. And a big stress reliever after dealing with the kids all day

No but I am going to try and be there with my daughter, if only to watch and will let everyone know she is the one that designed it and I only sewed it for her. Although I may have a fit from my daughter if she does not get to go on stage, lol. I had to meet someone at a motel where they were having a pageant because she did not get her other dress from the original designer she ordered from and someone recommended me to her. It was a rush order and I had to meet her at the motel before the pageant so her DD could wear the dress that day. My daughter saw the girls taking in their dresses and totes and knew we were at a pageant. She sat in the car and screamed "I wanna go to the pageant, mama, get my dress on. I gotta go get on the stage" Then when I told her it was not her day we had a 3 year old meltdown. The mom that met me at the car said she felt so bad that my daughter was wanting to go in so badly and offered to pay to let her enter, lol. I told her no, that she does not get what she wants by throwing a fit and we did not have a dress or anything else with us anyway. My daughter was mad until we got home and I let her dress up and parade around on the coffee table for us
