Alright, so... First year as security staff for a con I've been going to for... Five? Maybe six years? It was surprisingly fairly tame as opposed to years past where I heard stories without even having to be on staff.
But there's no such thing as a convention without a few assholes and creepers; it's just the nature of the beast. So here we go! Fun fun stories from security!
No touchy!
Now... It's not uncommon to give hugs to strangers at conventions. It's actually fairly commonplace, accepted, and just rather nice to see. However, you always ask first if you don't know them, and if they say no.... Bugger off. Simple as that.
This one guy didn't seem to get that simple concept. Wouldn't be too bad if this convention wasn't riddled with those at jail-bait status. I only had one person come up to me personally and complain, but I'm fairly sure there wasn't just one instance. Unfortunately, all I could do was give the heads up to the rest of security and the heads that he had been warned, and hope that anyone else who had problems would come to another staffer.
What did we say about the minors?
Okay... This is an instance where I'm not entirely sure how to view what happened because I didn't witness it first-hand. We have a recurring con-goer who is... Fairly unique. He doesn't dress up as a character or anything, but he is in costume. Most of the time, he really is harmless. Just a little off center an a bit awkward to be around sometimes.
Apparently, he was spoken to about inappropriate conversation with some minors. To his slight defense, there are many girls who go to these conventions who look and act as though they're well over 18, but there's also the fact that he's well into his 30's, possibly 40's, and far too old to be saying things of a sexual nature to anyone who even has the possibility of being underage.
Would have been better if he hadn't been spoken to shortly after this happened for having his badge displayed at groin level
Seriously? Just... Seriously?
Okay... Last specific story I have. This was Saturday night, which is the night of the "techno dance party" (rave). There have always been issues with the rave ranging from drugs, to drinking, to people deciding that it's the perfect opportunity to have sex in a tent full of people who are, for the most part, under the age of 18. The dance is held to amuse underage con-goers while the rest of us enjoy the 18+ panels and events.
Now that the back story is out of the way... We don't care if you drink as long as you're 21+. Have at it. Have fun! Enjoy that cocktail and then go dance like a loser for all we care. Don't overdo it, and don't make an ass of yourself by pantsing yourself in front of a group of high school kids, or by taking other peoples costume props and hiding them outside somewhere.
That, my friends, gets you escorted off the premises. More than likely by our wonderous security heads that can definitely be a little scary when they want to be.
Other than that, the only real issues I had were people running through halls and people bitching and moaning about needing to buy a badge to go into the vendors room. Really simple solutions for those, so they're not really worth mentioning.
