Don't know about other stores, but at Canadian Tire the reusable bags are kept behind the counter (so customers can't just pick them off the shelf), and when you buy them the clerk cuts off the tag with the UPC on it.
It helps that we haven't had reusable <my store> bags in stock for *months*.

I have a raincheck for them myself.

This is just proof that customers will take ANY excuse to piss and moan.

Seriously..a simple question about something as silly as a BAG, and it's worth getting all up-in-arms and irate over.

It's a BAG! It requires only a 'yes' or a 'no'. Geez. I feel for you!!

The bags at the Walmarts I shop at are looped around the check counter and PINpad, so it's pretty obvious when a customer takes a bag. They used to be in boxes at the end of the checkout stands, so the cashiers could still sort of keep an eye on them, but then they were also no more than $1 apiece (for the nicer ones), so the store probably didn't mind what little shrinkage they'd end up with on occasion.

I remember one store I go to will either put a "paid" sticker or make you have your items bagged, just so people walk out with an item not in a bag can't lie that they paid (when, say they found a receipt that someone just tossed in the parking lot, and walk in the store and get said item and pretend they paid).

Though other stores, when I buy milk or items with a handle (mom's Ensure, box of laundry soap) I ask not to bag those items without a problem.

My problem is remembering to take the bags into the store with me! I have about a dozen in my truck. They just never seem to manage to jump into my grocery cart on their own.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

I frequently forget if I'm running in for just a few things, but I've gotten better at training myself to grab them when it's time for the big grocery run. Now I only deliberately forget when I know we need to restock on plastic bags at home for our little wastebaskets.

We "recycle" our shopping bags kinda. They make nice trash bags. Haven't had to buy a trash bag here ever.

I do the same thing....and that's why I won't be happy if they do ban plastic bags like they keep threatening. I haven't had to buy a small trash bag in years and I'd like to keep it that way. Plus they are great for carrying lunches in my back pack to avoid spills and whatnot.

I do use reusable bags sometimes if I know I will need them or would prefer them for some reason.

I used to use the plastic grocery bags all the time for my wastebaskets but I found that most of them didn't quite fit. I now use them for other things and I buy the really cheap 4 gallon bags for my trash cans ("Ruffies" brand).
