I have a coworker that's a big fan of estate sales and consignment shops. She gets some wonderful jewelry that way. Besides, what's it matter that someone saved and splurged on something they enjoy. The woman was a jerk.

Heh, broke little me is going to be inheriting 4 tiffany watches from between 1949 and 1969 ... and a gold and imperial jade ring that back in the early 50s was appraised at $10000 [it was given to my dad to 'secure' a loan for the money for a bribe to get family members out of China for some friends of my grandparents.] as well as other odds and ends of my moms fairly expensive jewelry collection ... I know that the whole collection [my brother and I are splitting it] is on the order of $100 000 US ... [and yes the collection includes some family heirlooms that go back several hundred years and are entailed so we can not sell them.]

Pity I hate wearing watches.

as for nurse's wages... hmmm. I guess you could tell her that porn stars earn more. really - the average female in adult entertainment earns about 100-200K I think

She will probably go to his daughter's fiance and give him a earful about how the ring he gave her was not acceptable because a store person had the same ring and he must buy a much better ring in order to marry her daughter.

I did a stripper's (prostitute, just as likley--it's kind of a dead giveaway when the ask about dedcuting condoms AND offer "a private show" as payment). It was more a case of how much income she admitted to netting. Conveniently(coincidently?) in the range for maximum earned income credit.

That would be completely crazy and unfair, unless your employer has a specific policy about jewelry on the job, that applies to ALL employees. If your manager actually does tell you to take off your ring, please don't do it!

By the way, while I enjoy reading all the possible snappy comebacks to this awful woman that people are coming up with, I actually like best the way that you and your co-worker actually handled her. Not responding directly to her stupid comment, just telling her the total, then asking her to leave. That's the way I like handling stupid questions and comments myself: just pretend I didn't even hear it, and answering the SC only with business-related statements. I find that it puts them in their place more effectively than even the cleverest retort.
