My opinion of checking large bills is after the person gives it to me, it is mine and I'll check it all I want.
As for the antique $50 bill, in the US old styles of currency are still legal tender. Sometimes I am tempted to take one of the old "horse blanket" dollar bills I have and see how someone reacts to it.
A dollar bill is 6" x 2.5" (65mm x 155mm), the old "horse blanket" dollar bill is 7.5" x 3" (80mm x 190mm). The size change was made in the mid-1920s.
