  • Oh, the stupidity

This is my first post! Love this site.

I work in a pharmacy, first of all, and when there is only one pharmacist, we close for 30 minutes for lunch. On this day, I stayed the 30 minutes to...really, just to remind them of our hours even though they are clearly posted.

This woman walks up, and demands to know why we are closed. I said 'we close for 30 minutes for lunch when there is only one pharmacist.' Well, apparently, she can't wait the 15 more minutes until we open back up. I said 'you don't think the pharmacist deserves a lunch break?' So, she asks for a manager. I start walking to get one, then turn around and say 'you do know that the only person with a key to the pharmacy IS the pharmacist, right?' Apparently, that fact had escaped her, and she walked off in a huff.

The stupidity of some people is amazing.

    First,

It's amazing that more of these people don't manage to kill themselves with their own prescriptions.

        First,

The leading cause of death in Washington State for adults 27-54 years old is accidental overdose of prescription medication. As a result the state is drastically changing the rules for controlled substance prescriptions, the new rules were to go into effect last month but have been delayed until January 2012. The rules mainly involve dosage limits and requirements for referrals to pain specialists.

Most of the deaths involve methadone or oxycodone (Percocet, OxyContin etc) + a benzodiazepine such as alprazolam (Xanax) or diazepam (Valium) +/- alcohol. The combo causes apnea, or loss of the breathing reflex. The patients suffocate.

Prescriptions for opiates (narcotics) have soared in the past few years and there is a thriving black market. When the manufacturer changed OxyContin so it could no longer be crushed, snorted or smoked many dealers switched their customers to heroin. Heroin is now a huge problem in the high schools in all communities; urban, rural and suburban. Kids who wouldn't touch meth (illicitly made, bad reputation) but liked OxyContin (nice clean prescription pills, the hot party drug) are now heroin addicts. It's really sad.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

          Skeptic:
I didn't know that. I'd heard a little while back that heroin is a problem in high schools now, but never knew that was the reason. I just remember thinking "What? Heroin? Have these kids never seen Trainspotting? Fuck heroin."
