Based on my experiences, you pretty much do have to lie and say you are allergic to something in order to:
1) Actually get them to leave something normal off
2) Not get weird looks
It's like whenever I want a steak sandwich (cheese doesn't belong on that kind of meat imo). Menus never have "steak sandwich" but they'll have "cheesesteak sandwich". So when I ask for a steak sandwich I get told they don't have that and when I ask for a cheesesteak without cheese I get a weird look and/or they put cheese on it anyway because apparently who would dare want a steak sandwich without cheese? I noticed when I started to tell people I was lactose intolerant (which I'm not), I stopped receiving dirty looks and cooks actually wouldn't put cheese on it.
I mean, for complex orders, that kind of lying to get most of the items removed from it is ridiculous, but if it's one thing, I say go for it.

I'm lactose intolerant. I shouldn't have to say that every time. Now I will, when it comes to stuff like that. Oh, and I've also had to ask for a different soda at restaurants if they bring me a diet one instead 'cause aspartame gives me headaches of death.

That was just fucked up she outright lied about her allergies as an excuse to get her way on her food!
