Nah, the materials thing was that this guy had bought his own materials. He was going to mail them to me to make it from. So I wasn't including materials in my price, only my time to make it.

Obviously he needs a Business 101 class. It's not just the cost of materials, it's the price of your time. Otherwise you wouldn't actually make any, y'know, profit.

Every business that makes or fixes something has some amount of charge for labor. I may have the alternator and battery ready to go, but if I have my mechanic put them in the Jestermobile for me, he is going to charge me for labor. That is just the way of the world.

Now, if he thinks he can put the item together better than you and wants to save the $300, more power to him.
If he knows of another artisan that has quoted him a lower price for putting it together, that is his right.
If, however, he thinks he is going to get you to lower your price because he doesn't want to pay you what you have decided your time and labor are worth? Well, then he can go suck off an emu.

Yeah, after I blocked him on the site where we'd been talking he e-mailed me to say that it wasn't rude, I was just unreasonable, and he'd found several people who would do it cheaper.

Well good for him, and good for them. They're either faster than me or willing to be paid less than peanuts for their time. Bravo. Who cares! You still just say "No thanks" and not "Your time isn't worth that."

(And WHY do people always e-mail me after I block them? Yes my e-mail is easily available to the general public. But if I have blocked you that means I don't want to talk to you anymore. E-mailing me will just result in your getting blocked on e-mail too!)

The next time they tell me that quilting is so easy and quilts should be cheap I'll tell them how much classes cost, how many you need to take, and how much a 'basic' quilting machine costs. Not even getting into the whole "I'd like to make more then 2 cents an hour kthxbai"

What a lot of people seem to fail to grasp is that you're not just paying for the time.

You're also paying for the expertise.

If it didn't require skill and at least some form of training, then everybody would be doing it and it wouldn't be a viable form of employment.

Don't you worry about a thing. One of the biggest things I learned in my first year of commercial art school is that there are a TON of fish in the client sea. If you do good work, your reputation will grow, and those who are willing to pay you properly for your time will come out of the woodwork.

Pay no mind to the ones who would disparage you, I'm told. They will whine and cry and try to avoid paying you and say they can do it cheaper blah blah blah - screw them! When you're either first starting or haven't drummed up a lot of business yet one gets a little afraid of losing business and therefore would cling to unsavory clients. This is a bad practice though, because it's very much like giving money to a fraudulent beggar - they will keep coming and trying to rip you off because "Well, they're good portfolio pieces so it's win win right?"

.. and always get %50 up front at least.

If people knew what the markup was on most everything they buy, they'd shit bricks. Sometimes it's just greed and other times it's completely warranted...but in any event, it's the seller's right to charge what they like (local laws permitting) and if you don't like it, don't buy it. Especially custom, handmade stuff...geez! Put up or shut up!
