  • OK, go get it somewhere else then

Ugh, someone just sent me a message wanting to know about a dress in a size 5. I told her how much and she told me she couldn't afford it. Sucker that I am I told her I had a few colors of materials already that were left over from dresses I have made and that I would be willing to make her one for a lot cheaper then I usually do if she wanted a combo of colors I had(and my prices are already dirt cheap compared to other designers) She told me that the director of the pageant had glitz cupcake dresses for sale for 30.00. I guess she was hinting that I should sell her a brand new custom made pageant dress for that much as well. I sent her a list of the prices I pay for my materials and told her if she can get it for 30.00 go ahead and get it from the other lady because I could not even buy half the stuff to make one that cheap. For those that know nothing about pageant dresses, a "name" designer will make you one for around 1000-5000 according to who you use. I make them for around 200-300 and that is not making hardly any profit whatsoever. I was going to make her a dress for 75.00 and use materials that I would have combined and made a multicolor dress to sell anyway (for more then 75.00) and I was willing to make it a low glitz dress with around 500 swarovski stones. I know how it is if your daughter wants to do pageants and you can't afford it and I was trying to be nice. As it was I was still making NO profit whatsoever off this lady and she wants me to sell it for even less.

haha, I had asked which director it was and she just told me. The one that supposedly told her about the dresses that are cheap is a director of a pageant my daughter has been doing for 2 years now. And she holds about 5 pageants a year so we know her quite well. The super funny part? When someone asks her if she knows anyone that makes good dresses for a cheap price, she usually tells them about me This lady found me on Craigslist so she probably didn't realize I am the one that the director probably told her about I let her know we do those pageants and that I would have to ask the director what other designer she knows that she is referring people to so I can get materials for the same price this lady is getting them if she can sell the dresses for 30.00

So she essentially is saying that it was you that sells these dresses for $30?

You only charge a couple of hundred???

One of my clinical professors teaches our clinical group just so she has extra money for her daughter's pageants. Well, she likes doing it and it's good professionally, but all of her side job money goes towards pageants.

Yes, I am trying to get my name out as a good designer with well made clothes so basically I charge for materials and a little for my time. I barely make any profit but I want people to have my dresses on and win and then someone say, who did your dress and my name come up I will eventually start charging more once people start recognizing my name more and are willing to spend good money on a dress of mine. One dress I made recently that a girl went to a pageant in helped her win a 5,000 dollar prize (because apparel is part of the score and she got a perfect score for her dress) so I think I do good work

Awesome. That is too perfect. I've had that happen at my work where SCs come in and say "I talked to the manager. Her name was notlovinit. She said we could have *ton of food* for free." Uhm, I'm notlovinit....leave, please.

I wonder if she just heard cheap and in her mind cheap = $30.

I don't know what she thought. I told her maybe she could rent a dress from someone but with a glitz dress you can't even rent them for less then 40 or 50 dollars, even if it is from a mom and not a store. Sometimes the moms charge 100 or more just to rent if it is a mega glitz 5000 dollar dress.

oh, and just to throw this out there...If anyone watched last weeks Toddlers and Tiaras with Cindi and her red head daughter Peyton (yes the one with the wagon ) They are my bestest pageant friends My daughter and Peyton are buddies. I just barely knew Cindi from pageants when that episode was filmed over a year ago but we have become great friends. And I make all of Peyton's clothes now. She might be going and doing another episode and when she does I will be hand delivering her new dress for it so I can get my business on TV, lol.

She's probably thinking in off-the-rack prices still...

I have so much respect for those who sew because my mom did it. Any kind of formal gown is a pain in the butt to make, especially if you're designing the patterns. $30?? Um, no.

You couldn't even get enough Swarovski stones for the dress for a measly $30! I make jewelry and I LOVE Swarovski. Even with a quantity discount you're still going to pay for the quality of the stones.

You would be giving it away at the $75 price.
