  • "It's your fault I don't have my receipt"

Had a customer yesterday that just made my day.

SC: I bought a Vizio TV here, and I've moved since then so I don't have the receipt. But it's acting up now *insert confusing explanation of what's wrong using lots of techno buzzwords I'm not certain were being used right* And I've called Vizio and they said they'd fix it, but I need to send them a copy of the receipt. So I've been in here before and everyone I've spoken to says they can't get me a copy of the receipt.

Electronics associate D and I sorta just look at each other.

Me: How long ago did you buy it?

SC: somewhere between a year and 13 months ago.

D: We...no, I don't think anyone's able to get you a copy of your receipt from that long ago.

SC: Well, I don't understand why *starts sounding angry* And I even bought the Service Plan too but I can't find that.

Me: Anything dealing with that would be above us, would you like me to get you a manager?

SC: No, I've been in here and dealt with them before and they didn't do anything. I go into a Best Buy and they can pull up everything I've ever bought from them. I don't understand why they can't just make me a receipt. It's a Vizio TV! Where else would I have boughten it!

Me:...I'm sorry? There is nothing we can do at our level.

SC: Well, you just pass on my comment. I'm never buying another TV again. I just do not feel served as a customer.

Because every store has the same system right? We should be able to pull up every receipt since the age of time.

Only had a few people ask me, can you pull up my receipt for today, this morning, 3 hours ago?
    me: Nope.
    Them: Why not?
    me: Because I can't?

    People think technology can do anything these days. D;
Some days I just want to chase the customer around with a big book with teeth. D:

I've had customers claim that they've been told they wouldn't need a receipt. The dumbest one was the one who claimed I had told her this, last week.

It was my second day working there.

He was a jerk. Computers are not magic.

I've got patrons who think I should be able to tell them exactly which James Patterson's or Debbie Macomber's they've read and which one they're on next in the series. Um, no? Our system ERASES that info as soon as it's checked in. ON PURPOSE. Privacy rights and all?

I've had people come up and ask me if our system stores what color paint they bought x months ago. Or bring their receipt like "it says item number 123456 so can't you use that?" and we have to say no.. that's just the paint base. We still need to know what color you picked, and no we don't store that information.

Some places can pull up your receipt if you paid with a credit/debit card. I know Best Buy did it for me when I needed a warranty repair on a netbook. But I hardly expect every place to keep track of my shit for me.

We can pull up receipts up to 30 days, is what a manager told me when I passed on his 'comment'.

The most wtf moment was towards the end it started to sound like he wanted us to just make him a new receipt, since if he has the tv he must have bought it from us.

Oh sure, here is a receipt for the tv we don't even know you bought, let alone with us. Please return it for a full cash refund. Because we are complete morons.

Sorry don't mean to be so sarcastic, but really? Even if a receipt can be pulled up, if it was paid for in cash, how exactly could you tell who bought what? A vizio could have been sold that day, but that is no proof they are the ones that bought it.

Companies are supposed to keep a copy of the receipt in their system for 6 months if a credit or charge card was used to pay for it. After that they no longer have to keep the record. Of course all of us, not being complete idiots, can see the big gap between 6 and 12 or 13

We could, in our shops, pull a receipt for a mobile phone with the serial # of the phone. Of course that sucktomer didn't have the TV's serial number with him so moot point but any way, I want to say it's possible to pull receipts even if paid in cash in some places.

It all depends on the system, I suppose. A place small enough to ring up receipts in something like QuickBooks or Peachtree would normally have receipts indefinitely...but then again, I'm talking about places where the entire company has fewer than a hundred people working for them, including management. Bigger ones would just use a centralized POS system; it would be up to the POS provider how long that data is kept, and even if it's accessible to the ground-level troops ~_~ Holding on to anything beyond the pre/post-tax totals and actual amount of tax would simply take up too much space in anything large enough to be "franchised" -- From their point of view, why hang on to paperwork that 99.99999% of people wil NEVER ASK FOR and should have held on to themselves, once the "credit card holding date" has passed?

Last I checked, Vizio TVs were available at more than one store. I bought mine at Costco. WalMart sells them as well. There mayy be other retailers out there that carry them as well. Plus, they sell TVs from the vizio.com website.

And if SC never buys another TV again. Good luck with that. Most people like to keep up with current technology, and TVs don't tend to last 30-40 years like they could in the past. Everybody I know except for my grandmother, have replaced TVs in the last decade. We've tried to get her to upgrade, since she'd really like watching her ball games in HD, but she's very content with her 70's vintage 25" console TV.
