  • What Kind of Place Gives You Free Sodas?!

We had some assholes in the restaurant the other day who were mortified when they got their bill and saw sodas on it. What kind of places are you going to where you get free sodas?! McDonald's charges for soda!! What kind of person are you to call a manager over and say you didn't know sodas were not free? They are never free! Anywhere! You ordered it, fucking pay for it!

Here's the kicker. When told sodas are not included, these assholes actually said, "well, Shirley Temples aren't sodas". OMFG!! No, you're right, it's Sprite plus Grenadine, so it's actually more than a soda! I swear to everything these people should be slapped in the face several times.

That's crazy! I honestly can't think of anywhere that gives free drinks, the closest I know is free refills. Some people are deluded.

One bar I worked at many moons ago (i.e. '80's) had a deal for free non-alcoholic drinks for the designated drivers. They had to be accompanied by a paying drinker to qualify. But a restaurant in general...no place I've ever been--unless it was a part of a meal deal combo.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Casinos and designated drivers (with paying drinking person) and that is about it. Maybe some places would, if the bill is high enough *shrugs* (talking about $100 or so).

My husband and I went on a triple date recently to a semi-upscale restaurant (fancier than someplace like Chili's, but far from the fanciest place in town.) We all ordered soda or iced tea and none of us were charged for them. Granted, we did order a lot of food (we split a large appetizer, and everyone got a cup of soup, an entree, and a dessert.) Plus we were super nice to the staff and we stayed for about 2.5 hours and I think they knew we were going to tip well (which we did) so they probably just gave the drinks to us. We were all surprised when our checks came and there were no drinks charged to anyone, we certainly didn't expect it. In fact, we were thinking about asking the staff about it, but they were already closed by the time we left and were trying to clean so we just gave extra large tips instead.

I know! Especially since all you have to do is ask us for a water cup and then fill it with soda and ignore us when we yell at you. Jerks.

"Do we have to pay for all these drinks?"

"No, you're so cute you get everything for free!"

                  "Cool!"

I think a lot of times servers forget to ring up the sodas. That doesn't mean they are supposed to be free, you just got lucky. I know, where I work, since the servers have access to the sodas, they don't have to ring them up in order to get them to the customer, unlike with food or bar drinks.

Yes, the manager did cave. It's the most spineless restaurant in the city. But as a manager, you either cave every time or find a new job.

These were regular dining customers. And our restaurant is just like Chili's.

Or else they'll choose not to ring them up, but only like if you're a regular who's there every day. And it only happens once in a very, very great while.
Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

The last time I got free soda was..........at the casino. Coffee and soda are free while you gamble.

Old Chicago does this at their bar, or at least the one I go to does. A former CW and I go there every six weeks or so to catch up; I don't drink but he does, so they give me free drinks as his DD.

As for giving every patron free sodas ... never heard of that one. Hell, they didn't even give free drinks at my great-uncle's funeral reception.

Almost nowhere are you going to get free sodas, as they have a HUGE markup. They're an excellent revenue source, as long as you control the supply.
