It was ALREADY a pet peeve, but people keep hitting the button, to the point where it's probably a good thing this woman said it as she was walking away, or she'd have been treated to a screaming tirade.
*ahem* Anyhow.
Heard the other day, about something I was selling: "I wouldn't pay a dollar for that, it looks like it took five minutes to make!"
Why YES, ignorant lady, it did take five minutes to make! That's exactly why it's priced at a dollar! Let's do the math, shall we? Twenty cents or so goes to "being able to have this booth you are sneering at," since I must pay fees to be here. Another thirty cents is my materials cost. That leaves fifty whole cents for my time. Fifty cents per five minutes means I make SIX BUCKS AN HOUR. Which, I shall note, is TWO FIFTY less than I'd make if I went and flipped burgers for a living*, AND doesn't include the time I'm spending here at this booth trying to sell my work to ignorant nimrods like you.
I really, really, really hate it when people get all bent out of shape about my prices. YES it's more expensive than getting something made with sweat-shop labor from Walmart. DUH. Of course it is! I would like to be able to make a living! Unlike said sweart-shop workers, I cannot live on pennies an hour for my work. Sorry no. If you don't want to pay for it, you don't need to buy it, but you also don't need to sneer at me and accuse me of being some kind of scammer. I'm an honest crafter trying to make an honest living.
*I don't flip burgers for a living because I'm pretty sure I would eventually end up murdering my boss, coworkers, or customers with my flipping spatula. I don't work well with others, self employment is the only way to go for me. I'm occasionally a bit jealous of people who manage to hold down "real" jobs for any length of time, but the self-employed thing does have its occasional perks, and mostly I enjoy it, so it's all good.
