  • I'm getting really sick of hearing this kind of thing.

It was ALREADY a pet peeve, but people keep hitting the button, to the point where it's probably a good thing this woman said it as she was walking away, or she'd have been treated to a screaming tirade.

    *ahem* Anyhow.

Heard the other day, about something I was selling: "I wouldn't pay a dollar for that, it looks like it took five minutes to make!"

Why YES, ignorant lady, it did take five minutes to make! That's exactly why it's priced at a dollar! Let's do the math, shall we? Twenty cents or so goes to "being able to have this booth you are sneering at," since I must pay fees to be here. Another thirty cents is my materials cost. That leaves fifty whole cents for my time. Fifty cents per five minutes means I make SIX BUCKS AN HOUR. Which, I shall note, is TWO FIFTY less than I'd make if I went and flipped burgers for a living*, AND doesn't include the time I'm spending here at this booth trying to sell my work to ignorant nimrods like you.

I really, really, really hate it when people get all bent out of shape about my prices. YES it's more expensive than getting something made with sweat-shop labor from Walmart. DUH. Of course it is! I would like to be able to make a living! Unlike said sweart-shop workers, I cannot live on pennies an hour for my work. Sorry no. If you don't want to pay for it, you don't need to buy it, but you also don't need to sneer at me and accuse me of being some kind of scammer. I'm an honest crafter trying to make an honest living.

*I don't flip burgers for a living because I'm pretty sure I would eventually end up murdering my boss, coworkers, or customers with my flipping spatula. I don't work well with others, self employment is the only way to go for me. I'm occasionally a bit jealous of people who manage to hold down "real" jobs for any length of time, but the self-employed thing does have its occasional perks, and mostly I enjoy it, so it's all good.

I bet she would happily pay $1 for the same thing at the $.99 store because "$.99! what a steal!" even though it looks worse then what you could have made. Kind of boggles me when people buy 4 pack of pudding at the $.99 store and think it's a steal when the local grocery store has it for $.89.
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

    I wish porn had subtitles.

What is it that you make? I'm a crafter/artist too, and I feel for you. People don't want to pay fifteen measly bucks for a box I spent hours carving/woodburning with my own original designs that I hand-draw and hand-burn into the boxes, and I never ever use stencils or anything else on them-it's all me-so with the several hours it takes to make up the design, draw it on, burn it in, then put the mirror or picture frame on the inside of the lid and put cloth on the bottom-yeah, it takes about 48 to 70 hours per box, depending on how intricate the designs are, and I'm hardly asking anything for them but oh, it's too much, they could get a jewelry box or something with stuff on it for five dollars or whatever at wal-mart.

Gah. We artists/crafters are way too under-appreciated.

I've occasionally thought of going to an $x.99 pricing model. But dealing with coins seems like such a bother. Most of my stuff is in $5 increments, even, which makes making change (and having the right bills on hand) ever so much easier.

Five minutes for you, perhaps. If she tried making it, it'd take her five HOURS, her house would look like an explosion in a craft store, she'd be in tears and the item wouldn't look even remotely as good as yours.

Even if someone is blessed with natural talent, making things still takes time and effort, and most folks don't appreciate that part of it. So of course, they have to insult the item (and you in the process) to try to get you to go cheaper so they'll "take it off your hands". Screw them and their crappy attitudes. Life is too short to have to deal with people like that.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

For what it's worth... there are people who appreciate the work that goes into the handcrafted.

I hate that there is little to no money for me right now to put my money where my heart is

Grrr....I hate people who think like that. I'm related to a bunch of them too. They get the snippy remark from me about how they should know what I need to make if they're going to comment about how I'll need wrist surgery in a few years.
I wish I wasn't so poor, I'd show lots more love to the people who put all the time and effort into making something nice.
I'm pretty sure that if you're self-employed people think you are rich. My dad gets that all the time with his construction business...but he's pretty much the opposite of rich.

Yeeeeah if you don't mind getting me ranting and raving a lot in with the pretty pictures. Actually my signature link goes to my lj, where I post whatever I've made recently. I do all sorts of different things, but mostly plushes and costumes.

I *sometimes* make pokemon plushes. It's not my main business. I don't really want to make my primary living by ripping off other people's designs, even if in this case I'm not going to get sued for it.

The biggest mistake I have made recently was sale-pricing some of my much older merch at a con to try to get rid of it...and forgetting to actually pick up dimes and quarters at the bank to make the necessary change. Even dollar amounts (or even quarters, as I usually do for my teeny stuff) certainly is much easier to work with.

I looked a little harder, she makes lots of neat stuff and fur suits! I made my own paws, feet, and tail when I was 14. Haven't really done anything costume crafty since then but I envy you. I wish I could make a living doing that! The business world isn't nearly as fun

I have to admit, since I'm a sewer/crafter myself, when I go to a craft event to look, my first thought is always that I should make it myself, not buy it - but I appreciate what goes into it (in time, materieals, expertise and talent). I know what it's worth, I just can't usually afford it, lol. So I just give lots of praise and complements, and explain my budget won't handle it, but it's certainly worth their price.

One crafter had a sign up aimed at all us "looking" crafters, which I just loved - it said "Yes, you COULD make it yourself - but WILL you?".

                              Madness takes it's toll....
