I agree that a lot of the folks who 'forgot' their glasses actually can't read well.
I have little 'readers' that I keep in my pocket for reading the small print. (I just have not gotten around to getting those bifocals yet...)

My mom is one of the people who refuses to wear glasses no matter what. She's as blind as a bat and is constantly squinting and complaining that she cant read what some thing says. Lol

I used to wear some serious coke bottles ... thick plastic horn-rim frames, with what I suspect were actual glass lenses ... The thinnest point was visibly broad. They were H-E-A-V-Y, due in part to my prescription, which hasn't really improved over the years.

Then, one year, I opted to try on some reasonably-priced wire-frame glasses with much smaller lens circumferences (and opt for the lighter plastic variety of lenses that had become available in the intervening time) -- think the oval-shaped John Lennon style...Presto: The thickness of the specs dropped by more than a half (tho the edges are still thick due to that being the only way for me to have peripheral vision), the weight was nothing by comparison, and I actually started getting compliments on the look. I'll never go back now -- even tho my current pair is wire-frame wider, in a more rectangular shape.

My Dad is guilty of this - he HATES wearing his new glasses and will often go about without them, as he's convinced he doesn't *really* need them. He says he likes the self checkouts because they are faster, but they really aren't because he constantly needs help since he can't read anything on the screens without his glasses!

The other day he said he "Made a point of wearing his glasses for two days straight - but proved they don't help him see better because he walked into the door screen twice." - my Mom had started pulling the sliding screen door (keeps bugs out, but allows air through) over the front entrance and he said he kept walking into it. He kinda deflated when my brother pointed out that he, me, my Mom, and my niece and nephew have ALL walked into it as we weren't paying attention, he just needed to get used to it, AND keep wearing his glasses.

If I managed to forget my glasses somehow, I would be fucked. I'm nearsighted and have astigmatism. I can technically see, but I have to squint and it hurts my eyes like fuck to try and focus.

My aunt has reading glasses...it was both amusing and very sad when she tried telling me that I could do the same and save myself money...

I've needed glasses since I was twelve (earliest out of all my siblings and myself; one sister is lucky and still glasses-free), and I'm currently so badly nearsighted that anything beyond about a foot from my face is blurry. I could technically drive from my parents' house to town and back, but only because I knew the area so well that I knew what all the speed limit signs and street names were. I managed to train myself out of squinting in a futile attempt to see, thank goodness, but I much prefer to have my vision.

Since I think I tend to look a lot better without my frames, though, I have contact lenses I wear when I want to look nice. I reserve my glasses for slouching around the house. That might change once my new frames arrive from Zenni. We'll see.

Not only do I have the disorientation from having all that depth of field back (I get used to that quickly enough), but I find myself reaching to adjust my glasses before remembering that I'm not wearing them.

I tend to wear my glasses and contacts in cycles. Lately I've been wearing my glasses but for nearly the whole month of July I wore my contacts.
And since I had to pay full price out of pocket I found a pair of frames that look amazing on me.
I still prefer contacts though cause I'm super sensitive to sunlight and I'm out in the sun waiting for the bus during the middle of the day every day I work. And contacts mean I can wear my awesome sunglasses. ^_^

This is pretty much me on all counts -- save that I *needed* glasses since I was a toddler (I was one of those kids who sat 3 feet from the TV because I couldn't see it otherwise), but I didn't GET them until I was 12 or so.

As for my "adjusting glasses that aren't there" -- I have never worn contacts and don't intend to (have tried them, even the light sampler's at the doc's office *hurt* my eyes) -- so I really have no excuse.

I've only needed glasses for a few years. Okay, okay! I've *had* them for a few years, needed them for longer. I only need them for driving/movies, though, so I almost never have to wear them. I'm really not used to them, they're still uncomfortable and it's weird turning my head all the way to see something. Trying to read with them on is too trippy, have to take them off for that.

The manager's son got glasses not long ago. Which I'm sure you're all thinking, sure, no big deal, right? Yeah, I thought that too. Actually, his mother reacted as though it was the biggest shame their family's ever had to deal with. Add on the constant bullying he's going to endure at school. Maybe he'll be one of those people who doesn't wear their glasses when they need to, but it's got nothing to do with illiteracy or vanity.

His mother has her priorities out of whack. Wouldn't letting her kid go without the optical help he obviously needed be far more shameful?

As for the bullying, well, I did get called "four-eyes" by a few jackasses, but really, when I showed up for the first day of third grade wearing glasses for the first time, most of my classmates were just, "Oh, XC has glasses now, okay," and just went on with life. To most people, it's no more of a big deal than a new haircut or pair of shoes.

If he gets bullied about them it'll be his mother's fault: he'll be projecting his feeling of shame (caught from her), and the bully-types will latch right on to that.

Been wearing glasses since I was in second grade. (I'm 30 now) My vision is horrible. My shipmates used to joke they could see Japan through my glasses when I was stationed in South Korea. I can't wear contacts, I have an astigmatism in both eyes, a fear of touching my eyeballs and the bad habit of letting my nails get too long. So no contacts for me. I do have Transitional Lenses though, I live in Florida. I'm thinking about getting prescription sunglasses though as the transtionals don't get dark enough.
