I turned into quite the asshole over check tips. It got to where if, say, the order was $19.33, I'd have 67 cents in my hand before I even walked up to the door (keeping said hand in my pocket or under the pizza).

$20 check or $20 bill? I'd hand them the 67 cents quickly. I had a few try to say "That's your tip!", which is when I went into mega asshole mode and said "That's an insult, not a tip, keep it" and walk off. If they still tried to pass it off I'd just wait until the door closed and drop it on the doorstep. Yeah, I've had a few complaints about that.

I delivered off and on for right at 7 years though, and have delivery jobs waiting for me at 3 different stores if I ever want some extra cash (all of which I've delivered for at some point). I might take them up on it this weekend.

Oh yeah, my worst night: 12 deliveries, 7 stiffs (the rest were $1 tips). Not my best moment, but I cussed out the last 2 customers over it (one of which was a regular who always demanded remakes and was basically a pain in the ass.. she never ordered again).

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear, the student got lippy with the manager, not Jesus . If Jesus got lippy with her, there was probably a good reason.

Anyone else think the whole tip system has gotten kinda screwed up in recent years?

I personally think tips should have been an indication of satisfaction with good service. They should not been nor ever HAVE been a major part of a server or deliveryperson's pay. Used to be these people got a wage, and tips were on top of that... as it should be. Employer pays the employee, customer pays employer. Now a lot of places are clawing back a percentage of wages based on expected tips, so the hourly wage falls WAY below minimum. Employers still CHARGE the same for food, and rely on the customers to pay their employees on top of that.

When I delivered pizzas, we got paid $3 a delivery, and for the area, that was pretty good. There were places that didn't pay at ALL, and delivery drivers were paid solely by tips. There were others that paid more, but required drivers to surrender their tips.

This is a STUPID system. Customers are double-paying for their services, employees are being under-paid and employers can subsidize their operations on it. I'd rather pay more for a good meal, knowing I wasn't exploiting some poor schlub driving a car held together with duct tape and chewing gum, trying to make enough money to make his rent so he isn't sleeping in the ducttapemobile that month.

Just my minor rant. Having been said schlub in the ducttapemobile.

I have a question. What are you supposed to tip for food delivery? In restaurants I usually tip 20% and up unless service is REALLY bad.

I've noticed that we always get our pizzas fast and hot, but then I tip at least 15%, more if the weather's bad.
Same here. The pizza delivery person for the local place down the street is on a bike, so at times it can get especially dangerous (Brookline drivers are somewhat known for ignoring everything else on the road at times).

I think my household is known for tipping very well
Now and then, I have lunch with someone in my department. IMO, she is weirdly cheap. She'll spend a lot of money on things that I consider low priority, but she only orders water to drink at lunch.

Also, she never tips more than a dollar.

Where I work, we don't get hourly. We get paid a certain amount per run (so if the company doesn't get orders or the restaurant takes a long time to make the food, we are just sitting there, not making money). Luckily, though, the owner makes the order takers request a tip for the drivers and suggest an amount of 15%. So, when we are tipped poorly, we know that it's not just that the customer doesn't know about tipping, but that they actively refused to tip. This is why, when I deliver to hotels/motels, I hide the utensils until I am paid. Even a measly $1 tip gets them utensils (and plates if needed). While this isn't a big issue for pizza deliveries, I enjoy doing this when people order other stuff like pasta. It makes me feel a little more in control. *shrug*

On another, related note... If you order delivery, please don't use the time to engage in... extracurricular activities. I have interrupted people on at least 4 occasions (you can tell by their appearance when they answer the door: hastily thrown on clothes, sheepish expression, etc.). I could possibly understand this if I had shown up really early, but in each of these occasions, I was right on time or even a little late. And since the order taker told them what the delivery time was probably going to be, they knew what time they needed to finish up by. :/

wow.... I mean, I know that sometimes you really get into it, but who the hell gets it on when you've just ordered food? I'm at least capable of waiting until the delivery guy's gone before jumping the boyfriend.

Yeah! Eat the food the first so you have some energy for getting it on.

I try to tip as best I can. I may not have a lot of money, but I know these guys don't either an I appreciate them doing the not so fun jobs they have to to pay the bills. Always a few dollars from me (we typically only order a single pizza, there's only 3 of us under this roof).
