Ah, but in many places, you can also claim time spent on the court paperwork and proceedings. As long as you keep it reasonable, and track it properly for presentation to the judge. Check local laws to get the full details. Usually the small claims clerks can help you decipher what you don't understand in the law.

wow! What a cow! Sounds like the lady that owed me 3 weeks pay, and when confronted told me that she only discussed invoices being done once a week, not pay...so apparently I was meant to work without pay till she decided to pay me.

Ugh, I had it when people do that. >.> Your Wife did the right thing to just boot the twit. Those type of people will do it as long as they think they can get away with it. I used to watch two little hell raisers as they were recommended by a good friend who's kids I watched quite often. They would always short change me, charge me for things after I asked if they would and they said they wouldn't. One night I kept track of how many hours they were out and at Ten dollars an hour (and this was for two kids who are raised with no boundaries so they'll do whatever they want) they managed to be gone long enough to raise an 80.00 bill. When I demanded my money and got it, they never phoned me to babysit for them oddly enough.

Mind you a couple months later I saw the little brats again...they were mooning people near a busy street. The Ten year old and his younger brother who might have been old to start school, though more often then not they were left alone.

If there is a contract of some kind can't the op sell the debt to a collection agency? That might be way worse than small claims court.

I would so do this.

Find a collections place that would be willing to take a small amount against an individual and just let them deal with it. They'll take a cut and give you what's left. This serves two purposes: One, it hits the bitch's credit report, and two, if they collect, at least you get something, even if it's only half of what you're owed.

How about if I go to a restaurant and eat and then decide I don't want to pay? As others have said, you pay the babysitter when your kid's home sick and you have to stay home. You pay when you're on vacation.

I once refused to pay a sitter for one day. She was out of town, her teenage daughter was filling in, and the girl overslept. I could not rouse her banging on the door, and I had to skip work with no notice, which resulted in me getting written up and if that had happened three times I'd have been fired. I told the mother I was not paying for that one day and she had no problem with this. Otherwise, for pity's sake, pay the sitter!
