If this is a true story, I'm glad the man divorced that selfish harridan (several weeks? Can a divorce happen that quickly, even under these circumstances?). I hope she's behind bars, as well.

But in many states, the main reason for the 6 month wait between a grant of divorce and the divorce being final is in case they change their mind once they aren't mad at each other any more. In a case like this, I could see a judge not requiring a wait. Don't know if it's true, but sadly, I could see it happening.

Must be England, because we use 911 up here.

I don't know if it's illegal to publish a death notice if the person hasn't actually died. We just know it would be a huge problem for us so we can only accept notices from a funeral home or crematory, or else we have to be able to verify the death with the funeral home that handled arrangements (or with the medical school in case of donation--I should have them on speed-dial because a lot of people donate their bodies).

Considering that the article is posted in the UK section of the site and includes a disclaimer at the top that 999 is emergency in England, I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to have happened in England.

When I separated from my first wife, I had to wait a year before filing for a divorce. I was told it was ensure that there were no (or more) children resulting from the marriage. This was in Maryland.

In California, it's 6 months, and it's referred to as a 'cooling off' period.

And even if you've been separated for 3 years and living separately for that entire time, and both have found other lovers, they still make you wait.

Divorce law varies state to state- I am now really curious as to how they treat 'she tried to kill me' divorces, though. It seems that forcing a near-murder victim to remain married could be problematic for the state. Wikipedia, here I come!

Frankly, if there is any dispute over income, expenses, custody, property, it's probably going to take more than six months to settle it anyway.

Thats stupid.... How about the fact that your ex-wife-to-be was pregnant from someone else can be a good reason to get a divorce? Then you can pay child support for the reason you WANT the divorce anyway.

Fortunately, she wasn't. The only snag in my divorce was a judge who didn't believe in divorce, and would only sign a few every week. I was back from the honeymoon in my second marriage before I found out the divorce papers were signed. My office was aware of the angst involved leading up to my second marriage and, on the eve of the wedding, awarded me their Brigham Young Bigamy Award. I still have the certificate some 33+ years later.

I agree that the law does not make a lot of sense, but I was subject to it.
