  • poop....meet swirly oscilating object!

Ok guys not the best of situations...but mid day yesterday 2 of my venues call up and say opps we didnt realise it was going to be this busy we want someone in just to keep an eye on the joint. Now one i couldent get anyone free for so they were so out of luck, but for my main gig i went in myself for what was a 7pm start for just a few hours....

Now it isnt the busiest it has been there but it isnt exactly a quiet night, all is well from from 7pm till around half 9 when the 2 managers of the place announce they are going for a night out (they live in and on call 24/7) so they leave a fairly young but competant bar supervisor in charge (girl) and 2 lads on as wage slaves, and me to keep an eye on them all.....so no 3 hour shift as hinted at.

around 10.45 one of the lads is glass collecting and as hes at a table with around 9 people on it one lad is being an ass and playing the drums on the table like they are bongos (if thats spelt correct). He gives a warning to pack it in or they would have to leave, cue 30 seconds later when he starts up again. The bar lad shouts ok out...to which i come over and ask whats going on, told what is happening and tell the lad ok you need to be leaving now bud. At fist he trys promising he will listen and to give him a chance..a few times...to which he is told he has had the chance and blew it, time to leave. After about a minute of half arsed argueing he realises he has to leave. He gets up and starts making his way out, whilst he wals past the bar lad he gives a playfull slap on the face, i was a pace or so behind him and immediatly go to lock him up, but the bar guy slaps him right back but several times harder.......cue a peaceful walk out turning into a swan neck and dragging backwards as the guy trys to dive for the bar lad.

At this point 4 of the lads from the table jump to their feet to shout the odds and try back up their mate, the girl supervisor is on scene and calms them down a bit as i was about to drop their mate on the floor to try meet the oncoming threat of the 4, things are calm for the moment, i talk to the lad i have grips with he agrees he is in the wrong but bar guy over reacted, which i agreed with so i let go of the hold i had on him and we are back to a peaceful walk out with my arm round him.....a few seconds later im at the door opening it for me and the lad leaving when the bar guy is there saying something which i didnt catch, but cue one of the other guys at the table running and swinging for him. At this point the guy im escorting out starts pushing to try get back in and i am holding him steady at the door stuck between dealing with the guy in hand and with the new threat to staff. At this point the supervisor runs up behind the one swinging for the bar lad and grabs his collar and drags him back, choking him a bit and almost putting him on his ass. At this point bar lad escapes to another section of bar, lad being chocked by supervisor realises hes being tackled by a girl and surrenders. I take original lad outside and explain nicely dont try coming back in we have everything on cctv and if he does anything but leave the area police will be called. He gives the fair enuff no hard feelings and walks away.

I go back in and everything is calm as if nothing had happened, the whole group is back on table gossiping like the whole thing was a bad dream or summink, i give a stern look at the guy who tryed swinging at the bar lad and he gets up and says yeah no bother i shouldent have done that, i will go now. I tell him too right he was out of order, he has to go but he can finish his half a pint he had in his mitt if he was quick. Some of the guys at the table tryed argueing he did nothing wrong, we are all just enjoying a quiet drink blah blah. Supervisor come over and said that whole thing was unacceptable but we would let them all stay to finish their drinks if they didnt try argue (including the one i was taking out) They tryed argueing that they had done nothing wrong and that we were in the wrong by the way we were treating them blah blah. Arguement was ended by me stating loudly they they had been told they could stay to finish their drinks as long as there wasent a problem, do you have a problem. After a few rounds of this they agreed no problem sat down and stayed another 15 mins muttering about the staff etc then left with some of them apologising for the incident etc.

Now bar lad, i have learnt from having a quiet pint with the supervisor after shift (i bought for her help) lost his last job as a bar manager for being violent towards customers, and shes begged me to play his part as low as i could in incident log. I also explained to her whilst i was gratefull for her help which stopped me from having to try restrain 2 peeps and drag them out at the same time, that situation is exactly why there should be 2 people on at all times to which she agreed and asked why there wasent 2 in...to which i said the owners are too tight to pay for two, they feel security is expensive and as the license says they only need security when live music is on they try to scimp whereever they can

Aparantly shes having a word with management today about the whole situation and having a copy of the cctv burned to disk for reviewing.

Okay, if that guy is starting fights at the bar, then I'm sorry but he has to go. True, the SC was being annoying and going rather too far, but retaliating as the bar lad did and causing things to escalate like that is unacceptable, and it could have put you and your supervisor in a LOT of danger had he done it to anyone who happened to have more of a temper and/or a knife or other weapon with them. Putting you all in danger like that is just NOT something that can be allowed.

While I agree Bar Lad shouldn't have been retaliating, Original Instigator shouldn't have been making even a playful swing at him, much less to his face. Some people can shrug that kind of thing off and ignore it, but other people will take great offense, as BL obviously did. OI should have kept his hands to himself.

BL also shouldn't have been making any comments about OI until he was out the door and gone.

I wouldn't fire BL about it, but I would tell him that the retaliation at OI was strike one, and his unwise remark about OI that got OI's buddy to come at him was strike two. As in, one more strike, and he's out.

The thing is... it won't matter how much you "down play" BL's involvement. He was caught on video.

Not only that but, from the way you described it... it sounds like BL could see that you were going to restrain the original jerk. If BL started hitting the jerk WHILE you were restraining him, then that may cost him his job no matter what you say in his defense. Because ... if the jerk's restrained, then BL's no longer covered by the "self defense" umbrella.

But that will all depend on how the video looks I guess and what the boss feels upon reviewing the footage.

PepperElf, the lad had started walking out, but BL was a step or so towards the door and we had to pass the place he was stood to exit. at the start of the slap slap episode there was no need to restrain him as he was going of his own violation. Then the slap back was instant and before i could make contact with the instigator.

            That man needs another job.

Bar staff obviously shouldn't be expected to take abuse, never mind physical violence, but it isn't a job for anyone who can't diffuse a situation where needed.

To me letting him continue to work in a job he can't handle safety isn't doing him any favours. Being out of work sucks (I know!) but being seriously injured in an avoidable situation would be worse. If he can't manage his temper he puts himself at risk, and every other person working with him.

It's why people like the OP may look like they're up for a fight, but if (like the OP clearly is) they are good at their job they are more skilled in keeping things as calm as possible than anything else. Most door staff I've met are very self-contained and disciplined for this reason.

It's not even like it means he can't work customer service, just not bar work which will always involve aggressive drunks, and disagreeing with customers (at the very least refusing service at times).
