  • Nice Try Dumping Your Trash

Ok, I feel a little bad about this, but not by much.

I found a 30 gallon trash bag sitting in a handicap parking space in front of a store. Open it up, it's your basic kitchen trash and....mail Now, we get enough people trashing our property; they think nothing of emptying their car trash into a spot, tossing some boxes in our dumpsters and sometimes even leaving a random TV or mini-fridge. It's hard to catch them, but here I had a perfect bag of trash with multiple pieces of mail with the same name and address.

I called the police, they checked that the information was current, and the person was going to be contact and cited for littering.

About an hour later I get a call from the Office that the lady is here to pick up her trash. I guess the police gave her an option; get her crap or get fined. She had the most sourpuss face I've ever seen! I asked her why she dumped her trash on our property. She claimed she hadn't left trash here and she didn't know how her mail was in the trash. I asked if she had been parked by Store X. She said she can't afford to shop at Store X and that she "Sure can't afford no steak dinners!" Well, funny thing, there was steak packaging in the bag, but I'd never told her what was in there! (unless the police mentioned it) Not to mention when she put the bag in her trunk there were some of the same type of soda cans as were in the bag. I think she was just sucking sour grapes because she was caught! I mean, she didn't even bother dumping the bag in a dumpster we have placed for construction not even 100feet away!

I wish she could have also gotten cited for using a handicapped spot. She didn't park there, but still.

I have a similar story about when I was on the road with NatureScene (a show that features a famous local naturalist hiking around talking about stuff). Some asshat dumped his trash off the road in a nature preserve we were doing a show on.

So not only did he dump on federal land, but he got busted by the freaking NatureScene crew and none other than Rudy himself. To put this in perspective, imagine you left a campfire burning when you left your camp and Smokey The Bear stepped out of the woods and caught you red handed.

That's a burn, right there all right. The rangers told us to leave it in situ and they came out. The asshat's mail was in there. We could have driven up to his doorstep, if we'd wanted to. Which is what the cops did.

I guess if someone is too stupid to know not to do stuff like this, they're too stupid to cover their tracks, too.

My ex next door neighbor, a man I less than affectionately refer to as The Shitbird Next Door, would leave his trash out for dogs to drag around. It always ended up in my yard. Eventually, cops got called when I got sick of picking up his wife's feminine products, his beer cans, his cigarette butts, his VIAGRA BOTTLES, etc. Actually conversation I had with him:

Me: Really? It's not your trash?
SBND: No, there's no way that's my trash.
Me: How did a week's worth of mail with your address end up in there?
SBND: (with a dumb, vacant shake of his head.) I don't know.

                  Redneck fuck.

OT but I just saw Arlo Guthrie perform at Prescott Park. Great show but he didn't do Alice's Restaurant.

What amazes me is that it took more time and effort to take a bag of trash over to that parking lot than it would to just put it out on the curb on garbage-pickup day. Dumb.

Speaking of fires being left in the woods....we actually saw someone do that once. We were down at a park called Panama Rocks (Google it...it's pretty cool), and my sister & I had gotten tired & gone back to the parking lot to wait for our friends to come back from their hike. Right next to the lot was a small campsite with a girl & a couple of guys, their truck, a ton of empty beer bottles & a huge campfire.

They packed all their stuff (except the empties---of course) into their truck and drove off, leaving the fire burning. I wish we had had the presence of mind to write down their license plate number. When our friends came out of the woods a little later, the assholes had not returned, so we went over and put out their fire. Dumb buttheads could have been responsible for burning down an old-growth forest.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

That would be like trying to poach, and getting caught by the Croc Hunter.

Except in many communities you have to pay for garbage pickup. So if you don't pay for it, the garbage folks won't haul away your trash. I admit my sister was one of those who'd go to fast food places to dump her trash in the dumpster. This was when she couldn't afford her house payment, let alone garbage pickup. Doesn't make it right, but I understand why some people do it. No excuse for randomly dumping in parking lots or along the road, however.

Well, taking trash to a restaraunt's dumpster may be a bit wrong, but it's certainly better than spreading the garbage all over the place.
