Racket_Man's post reminded me of a common issue when I was working security.
Co-irkers would order pizza, forget something and want a parent/wife/husband/whatever to bring it to them..but not want to come up to meet them..ie have them bring it back to them. Which, since it was a secure facility, was NOT going to happen. I've heard every excuse in the book, though it was very rare that I got yelled at because of DA RULES. The company takes security seriously, because if anything is out of place or unusual and the FDA visits, they can shut them down.
Now, if a person goes to HR, and requests a visitor pass, then everything is ok. If anything goes wrong, the person requesting the pass gets the fallout. Then it becomes not my problem. Of course, that would be a lot of work just to receive food or something a person forgot.
They would call up, tell me somebody was coming and to let them in.
The conversation would go something like this.
M - Me
CW - Co-Worker
M - Do they have a HR Pass?
CW - No, they will just be a minute.
M - Then I can't let them in, you are going to have to meet them at the desk.
CW - I can't..<insert critical reason they can not leave wherever they are>
M - Then I will just keep the item up at the desk. You can pick it up at anytime.
CW - I need that item now! Can't you just let them in for a minute?
M - No. I can bring item to you, unless it is a gowning area, but I can not let anybody in without a Pass.
CW - Why? That is stupid.
M - Do I really have to remind you that this is a secure facility, and that unauthorized personnel are not allowed past the front desk?
CW - FINE! I will be up to get <item>, but that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!
Of course sometimes I hear...
CW - I am <important person (important to themselves
)>, you will let this person in.
M - No, I won't. Only X and Y can authorize somebody coming in without prior HR authorization. Call them, and have them call me. Otherwise, I have to have them wait out here, or hold the item.
CW - You will let them in or I will have your job!
M - Go ahead, let them know I am following procedure.
CW - <cursing commences>

I was not customer service, my job was not to handle phone calls. I hung up. Which was fun. For some reason none of them ever come to yell at me face to face.
