My mom is 84 and very modest about her background. She lived through the Great Depression (her family was poor, though fortunately they were never homeless and my grandfather did get some carpentry work) and World War II, then she worked for many years as a secretary in a very male-dominated world before finally being able to settle down into the role of full time wife and mother. Even then, she had to worry about money constantly for most of my childhood, though she enjoyed family life. She remains in good spirits to this day and is one of the sweetest people I know (yes, she does have her sour moments occasionally! ). But she never ever EVER plays the "pity me" game or tries to trump someone on how bad things may have been in the past...and she may wonder why someone might like a particular book, TV show, movie, whatever, but she'd never be so rude as to criticize anyone for it.

In other words...that woman you talked to - no matter what her age or circumstances - can go suck it. She's no better than anyone else, and it is none of her damn business what you read or why.
