  • I don't like the policy so I will whine like I'm six

For the record, this couple was at youngest 45 or so. And our cashier tonight is 18. I was straightening near the Halloween stuff and the couple was taking pictures of some kind of decoration. Picture-taking is not allowed in our stores without express permission (usually only news crews). I've been instructed before if I see it to let people know. As I walked by I called out (not loudly, even--just enough to get their attention from several feet away) "Oh, we don't allow people to take pictures in here." The woman responded, "Are you kidding??" Why would I take the time to make something up? I have 10 minutes to get all of toys done. I answered, "No, I'm serious. It's a company policy." I went around the corner and they kept going on about it. When they got to the front to check out, they complained to the cashier that I "yelled" at them, they were "valued customers" and that they tell all their friends to shop with us, yada yada yada. Know what we value? People who accept the rules.

I know how you feel. In my casino pics and any kind of video is NOT allowed. I'm curious about why it's not allowed where you work but hey rules are there for a reason.

They probably don't want those pictures to fall into the hands of their competitors.

There are a few reasons I've heard for "no pictures" rules in retail businesses. Sometimes, it is to protect "trade secrets" regarding lay-outs, signage, and such, thought this is rare. More common, it is to prevent criminals from "casing" a place and using the pictures to plan out a theft. Another common reason is to prevent someone from using the photos to lodge a legal complaint, which is typically for some minor or staged violation.

Yep, we had a no pictures rule so no competitor would steal our layouts or display ideas. We also had a rule about if we seen someone writing down prices but not actually buying anything, let management know. We did not want any "secret shoppers" from the competition trying to beat the prices. BUT the funny thing is, I was sent out on those same secret shopper trips to competitors to send their pricing to corporate. I was just given some money to purchase some run of the mill items and pretend I was looking at a shopping list and marking off items. And if I got caught, they didn't know who I was and I did not work for them I was usually chosen for the trips since I had kids and could take my kids with me since a single person wearing dressy work clothes would look more suspicious.
