  • Common annoyances (long)

I work at a hotel, and here are few pet peeves.

    Reg Cards
I lay the registration out on the counter so Guests can fill out the needed information. Before I can mark it they:
1.) Pull it across the counter where I can no longer reach it and stare at me blankly
2.) Try to grab the pen while I'm telling them where to mark
3.) Once I've marked, told them where to mark, and showed them where to mark they don't follow my instructions. No I don't need you to go outside and hold up the line to see what your License Plate is, your make and model is plenty info for me.
4.) Try and take the reg card with them

    Personal space
I have a counter between me and the guests, so I dont have a lot of issues here, but I annoys the heck out of me when a guest is filling out their information, and a new guests comes and leans against the counter, shoulder to shoulder with them.
Are you that much in a hurry you are trying to put pressure on them? Or are you trying to see if they got a better rate? Stand behind them please, seriously.

    Wait your turn
I'm making keys and retrieving the reg card from the printer, I'm clearly helping someone, don't walk up to me and start asking me questions, interrupting the other people! Its rude, and I'm going to respond the same way every time. "I'll help you in a moment". You trying to ask me 100 questions while i'm helping someone else makes you look like a prick, and if I were to respond I'd be rude to my current customer. So do us both a favor, and wait your dang turn.

    Carts
I actually have good friends, who I highly respect do this when they visit hotels, and if I catch them doing it again, they're gonna get an ear full. YOU CAN'T KEEP LUGGAGE CARTS IN YOUR ROOM! How rude can you get?
And leaving it in the hall outside your room is NOT good enough. If we don't have bell service, what makes you think I'm gonna roam the halls looking for carts? I have better things to do... like read Customers Suck posts.

    Rates
My chain is one that can negotiate rates at the desk. I have a lot of freedom, but if you try and negotiate rates with me with other people waiting in line you're not going to get a penny below AAA/AARP/Military rate! If you want better than that, step out of line and wait until it clears. If i ever have a guest who has the mind set to do that, I will give them a HUGE discount!

And on that note, DO NOT come in here and say "What? Your rate is 129? I can get 79 down the road!" And then try and be vague about which hotel quoted you that rate. For one, you're LIKELY lying, and if you're not lying you are telling me the rate you were quoted at the 30 year old piece of crap hotels down the road who are offering any where from 69-99 dollar rooms. you get what you paid for. Clearly I am a MUCH nicer place!

Also, I don't give a crap what the rate was last week, last month or last year. That's not today! And for the record, this is a resort town. You're not going to pay the same rate here than you will in a typical 'just off the highway' town. Our rates are higher, deal with it.

    Making a res
Who in their right mind calls at 6pm on a Friday night to make a reservation? I'm going to forward you to central, if you don't like it, don't call back and complain about it. I'm BUSY and I'm ALONE, it is the absolute WORST time to call. I mean if you're making it for tonight or even tomorrow night I'd be more inclined to help you out, but if yo're calling for a reservation that three months away?! Forget it. I'll ask you to call back a less busy time, or make the reservation on line, or through the 1800#

    Needs
Ok I understand, we put three towels in rooms that can accommodate up to 6 people, you need a few more. No problem. But If you call me to ask for more, I'm going to ask you to pick them up at the front desk.
"What there is no one who can bring them?" Is NOT the proper response.
No we are not a full service hotel. And if you are a stayover and put the Do not Disturb sign on your door, don't get all pissy that I'm not going to send a housekeeper to you at 9pm to bring you towels, coffee, more shampoo, more soap, etc. You can get the supplies you need at the front desk.

I know your toilet is clogged, but I don't have 24 hour maintenance staff. Its a 78 room hotel, in a shopping town in the North East US. Its going to take me about half an hour for me to get my on call guy here to take care of your issue, if that's not fast enough then take my offer to move rooms! DUH!

    Boundaries
If there is a 'Be Back in 5 minuets' sign on the desk, its NOT ok to try and open my Front Desk entry door to see if i'm hiding in the back.
I forget to lock it when i run to the bathroom from time to time, I try to be quick as i can, but several times recently I've heard the office door opened, someone calling in, and then closing it. The bathroom is right next to it, so I know! If I left the sign out, clearly I'm not there!

Two weeks ago I went to the bathroom, and heard this happen. I was gone from the desk maybe 3 minuets total. That time of the month Not much i could do to be faster. I wash my hands and exit the bathroom. This woman is standing there. I assume she was waiting for the BR and so I smile and nod as I prepare to go back to the desk.
SC:"You have a lot of people waiting for you"
    Me: "Oh, thank you"
SC walked along side of me down the hall, I turn in to the office, and she rounds the corner to the lobby "I found her!"
Seriously? I had the sign out, was gone for 3 minuets and you felt the need to hunt me down and escort me back to my post? and get this, she wasn't even a check in! She had just seen someone waiting for me!! I know she had hunted for me, because I heard the office door, I heard the breakfast room door, and heard her voice calling Hellooooo? UGH!

thats all the petpeeves I can think of right now... I know there are more, but I'll get to them later! LOL

OH YEAH! i just remembered my other big petpeeve!

October is NOT 'Off Peak' season in this area. Notice all the pretty leaves you came to see? well thousands of other people had the same idea!

How Dare you try and berate me for my rate being too high, and try to inform me its Off Peak season? Im not going to go "Oh yeah! I forgot! Heres a room for $79 for yo! Oops!"
I want to tell them, "Well.... you're here aren't you?"

I hate this. Especially since the guest's address is on the reg card, they're entering their PIN on the card reader, and I'm trying to direct them to their room. That's all information that the other person does not need to know and the guest I'm checking in probably doesn't want them to know. I'll often give the intruder their own reg card waaaaaaaay at the other end of the counter and tell them they can fill it out while they wait. If they don't take the hint and migrate back over, I flat out tell them point-blank to please stand back while I finish checking in the guest. They will then turn red and back off at that point.

What also annoys me is that sometimes a spouse/partner of the person checking in will come up and stand next to them, and neither one acknowledges the other. So offering a reg card first usually helps me determine if they're together or not.

seriously, if I go to ANY hotel without a reservation, I ask if they have rooms available, ask the rate (if there's a choice of rooms), pay it, and go to bed. Because quite simply, if I don't have a reservation, it wasn't a planned trip, and I'm tired and just need to sleep. Heck I've even changed my own sheets because they had a room that the person checked out after housekeeping left/housekeeping wasn't able to get to. I just want to sleep, I am not making any kind of fuss because something happened that I didn't have time to plan for-not the desk clerk's fault.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes
