  • SC yells at us because someone hit his car

I'm just going to copy/paste the incident report I filed with Corporate:

Shortly before 11;30AM, SC came in to say that his parked vehicle had been hit by someone else. The vehicle that hit him was gone. He wanted us to look up the vehicle that hit him, but since we didn't have any information on that vehicle we could not provide that information. We advised SC that the proper course of action would be for him to file a police report. SC said he refused to call the police and demanded the number to Guest Relations and said he wasn't going to stay with us ever again.

SC was driving a newish, gray pick-up truck, plate #[redacted]. He left before I could get the make/model. The car that hit him was a white car, as it apparently left behind a piece of a white panel. We have retained the panel for the time being in case SC later re-evaluates his decision to file a police report and the police want to see it.
This guy was SCREAMING at Maint Man and CW. Dude, we didn't hit your car, what do you want us to do about it? He said that the car that hit him MUST HAVE been staying here and we MUST HAVE the license plate number on file!

A few problems with that one:

    (1) We have more than one other guest staying here. So we have no way of knowing which car hit him.
    (2) Not every car that pulls into our lot and parks is a guest here. Even among guests here, not everyone registers their vehicles.
    (3) You only need to give the plate number on the reg card. I don't have a magic system where I can input plate numbers and it will tell me the make/model of the car. The police, on the other hand, have such a system, and if they so chose to use it, we'd be more than happy to turn over our list of plates.

Seriously, this is a matter between you, the police, and your insurance. It sucks, but it's not our fault, not our responsibility, and really there's absolutely nothing we can do to help you. I don't know what SC wanted me to do other than psycically divine the plate number of the guy who hit him and/or wave my magic wand to fix the damage. It sucks, but to be frank it's not our problem. Now go DIAF.

ETA: We don't have cameras around the parking lot, and we have signs everywhere saying watch your car and stuff 'cause we ain't responsible.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

it's the same reason why customers berate employees for not telling other customers to be quiet...

if they can't punish the other customer they'll punish the employee for not "doing something" about it
