  • Paper produce bags, green hair and ?!?

I barely get onto the floor and a woman grabs my arm (do NOT do that if I don't know you; somehow I managed not to go off on her) and demands a manager. A is a few feet away, so I wave her down. Thinking that the customer just has a normal question.

"I'm very offended! There is no pen at the self checkouts [lie; it's on a tether by the signature pad] and one of your employees told me to 'just use your fingernail' and was very rude. This is [mytown]. I expect to shop in [mytown]. If I wanted to shop in Southie I'd go to Southie!" (then why are you here?)

Sigh. We all got a good laugh out of it over at the desk after she left.

    ---------------------------

Mom's run into an older guy who said to her "What nice green hair you have!" He just 'complimented' me earlier today. Um, thanks? *is now tempted to dye my hair green around St. Paddy's Day*

    ----------------------------

An older woman accosts me in the produce department, asking for paper bags. The only paper bags we have are the grocery sacks, lawn bags and packs of lunch bags. I think these are what she's looking for, and...she cuts me off "No! No! Paper bags like this!" *points to a spool of plastic produce bags* "Paper bags for to put vegetals in, on a spool like this. All stores have them." I have never seen paper bags on spools.

" 'Happy to help'." Reading off of my apron, said in a very condescending/sneering tone. "You don't know how to help!" and stalks off (um, you never gave me a chance?). One of the produce guys gives me a I'm still trying to figure out what she meant.

Wow, it's a wonder SC #1 didn't go all the way to the top to complain about NO PEN. (Is this a regular pen? If so, doesn't she have at least one in her purse??)

As for SC #3 ... I'd like to see paper bags on rolls. I've seen the occasional small holder with VERY SMALL paper bags for some bulk items, but the vast majority of the time it's those plastic bags on the roll.

I have NEVER seen paper bags for vegetables in the produce dept., and at one time we had about 5 or 6 separate grocery-store chains operating in this area. We still have at least 4 and they all have plastic bags. I don't think even the co-op, with its organic stuff and "green" practices, offers paper in the produce dept.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

The 'pen' for the signature pads is a stylus; I do recall customers trying to use a real pen and breaking them...it's a wonder she didn't try that. The tether is retractable, but it is clear that there is a pen there...part of me thinks she got mad when it wasn't 'writing' the way she thought (although I would think that CW telling her to 'use your fingernail' would be a clue-by-four that it wasn't a writing-type pen). I should ask S or B (store managers) next time I see either of them if they heard about it.

I've never seen paper bags on a roll; the closest thing we have are the bags for bulk coffee beans. Even the organic co-op across the river has plastic bags for produce. Of course, the SC refused to elaborate on WTF she was after, and seemed to take some glee in telling me I 'didn't know how to help' (I'm tempted to ask A if she tried to complain about me).

#1: The stylus is a lie. Obviously. Good news is it doesn't seem like your manager compensated for SC's stupidity/craziness.

#2: The only way I could see that mistake being made is if you/your mom were blonde, and had a green tinge to your hair from...being in a pool, I think? Even then, where the hell does he get such a "compliment"? Also, if you dyed your hair green he'd probably call it orange or something!

#3 The crazy is strong in this one. I have never, ever seen paper produce bags. I don't know what world she lives in!

Mom's hair is fully gray; she used to dye it, but stopped about 10 years ago (it does have a slight yellow tinge at times, but nothing noticeable unless you were looking very closely). My hair is kind of a medium chestnut brown with some gray (I'm planning to color it black and wonder what he would call that?). If my hair does change color naturally, it gets reddish if I'm in the sun for a while.

I kinda could see how mom's hair might get a green tinge under some fluorescent lights, but how does he get 'green' from brown?

#3 was of a certain ethnicity that tends to enjoy abusing anyone in this neighborhood but especially those they see as 'the help' (also generally crazy)

The Whole Foods in my city all have paper bags for produce. They also have plastic, but they have signs encouraging people to use the paper bags.

Yep, several stores I've been to have small stacks of brown paper bags (lunch bag size) next to the mushrooms cause it isn't good to put them in plastic, but never seen them on a roll. Don't think I've ever seen any type of paper bag on a roll in my entire life (and that's a long time ).

                    Madness takes it's toll....

Uh, yeah, dreamstalker, not sure how he got green from either of those. Wow. You'd have to be completely colorblind or something!

That was my first thought, but I thought colorblind meant you couldn't see color or distinguish say, yellow from green. Not sure what you would call getting one color from something completely different.

Oh yeah, one I missed. Some guy wandered into the store (he looked homeless maybe? the frozen-foods guy who was watching the doors had a close eye on him in any event) and started darting around asking everyone in the area "Are you Catholic? Are you Catholic?" I didn't see him after I got back from a thirty-second trip to produce-land so I assume he got kicked out.
