  • Expires today so I can't use it today

Due to a mistake on our supplier's part, where they sent us 150 milk packets instead of 50 (four bottles to a packet), we were left with about twenty bottles of milk to get rid of. If we have to pour it away, we lose all the money so we decided to knock it down to ten pence each (original price is £1.20). Most customers who ask about the milk are gladly buying it, cuz milk lasts a couple of days after its sell by date but one woman had to be difficult.

She said she wanted one bottle of milk for church to make the tea and asked if we had anything else than the "gone off" milk. I replied that the milk wasn't off, it just was dated today. Take into consideration that this is quite early on a Sunday morning, around ten. The woman made a catbutt face and said she couldn't possibly risk buying the milk cuz it expired at the end of the day and demanded some "fresh" milk. I told her we didn't have any and she tantrumed out of the store.

Honestly... if you're going to use an entire bottle of milk that day, what does it matter if it expires today?

Makes me think she would've demanded "fresh" milk for the discounted price. You just know that complaint was coming.

Good grief, it's not as if the milk is suddenly going to turn to curds and whey between one second and the next!

Wow, that's crazy. At that price I'd buy a bunch of those and freeze them!

Yeah, I forgot about a carton that wasn't opened and dated Jan 11. It passed the smell test and I used it for cereal today lol. I did throw out the opened Jan 7th one. It didn't pass the test

I guess I was in the mood for milk at the store, but not at home lol.

I'd have bought that milk for sure. The date isnt magic.

The 'sell by' dates on pretty much everything are just SUGGESTIONS. (Disclaimer: in America, that is. Don't know if it's the same on the other side of the Atlantic.)

Far as milk goes, sure, I won't buy any that's actually PAST the suggested sell by date, but deeply discounted, on the sell by date? Absolutely, and as a couple of folks have said freeze what I don't plan to use right away. Actually, I've done that, or very nearly, at a local surplus/damaged goods grocery local to me.

I've had milk that still passed the smell/taste test almost 3 weeks past the sell by date. It's not at all uncommon for me to keep milk for up to a week or 10 days beyond its date due to my shopping habits. Keeping it properly cold does wonders for extending its usable life.

It depends a lot on how cold you keep your fridge. The colder you keep it, the longer the milk will last.

It never occurred to me to freeze milk. I sometimes end up throwing milk away because I don't use it fast enough . . . I'm single and I don't drink milk or eat cereal every day. What kind of a container do you use?

I 've had milk fail the smell test days before the sell by date and then some that's lasted days after.

I've seen and done this with meat and chicken in the grocery store. Sometimes stores will have "manager's discount" coupons on a pack of beef that has a sell by date of that day. And its quite a substantial savings, so if I'm going to freeze it, I'll get it and freeze what I don't use.

I can see freezing whole milk working, as it is actually mostly *milk*. Allow quite a while to totally defrost in the fridge, tho. We tried freezing skim milk, ONCE. It separated out into 2 inches of white platelets and the rest of the jug, grey water. How else did ya think they reduced the fat content by 75%, if not by adding water (& sugar for some brands), then charging the same price? ^_^

We couldn't get the stuff to reconstitute, either. Yuk.
