  • "that's not my job"

    me:
    sc: you know who
    scd1 and scd2: sc's daughter 1 and 2, 14-years old and 8 years old, respectively
kb: kamehameha bitch - mom of sc
    oc: other customer
cw: co worker from first floor

One Sat. I was on the second floor of the library. Now anyone on 2nd floor duty is by themselves, and the floor is maybe the size of a large movie theater lobby. And there are walls and bookshelves. And we have two desks, far from each other, so it's not surprise one person might not see the librarian at the other desk. And the librarians are expected to shelve books, and walk around to see if anyone needs help.

So there are times where a patron does not see a librarian.

This Sat. I'm shelving books, and go back to my desk when i was done. A cw calls, asks me where I am on the second floor. I tell her where, and she tells me to not move, she is sending a patron who was looking for me for help.

Now the sc isn't rude or has an attitude, but she really isn't going to lift a finger.
sc: my mother wants a book on beauty.
me: ok, what is the title?
    sc: I have this number
me: *looks at a partial call #* ok, let me show you the area.
I show here the area, and she said she wasnt' going to look for the book, it's not her job.
me: ok, do you know the name of the book?
sc: no, my mother didn't tell me. She tells me it's a famous book.
me: ok, is it milady cosmetology? Is it Bobbi Brown?
    sc: I don't know.
me: ok, I can't help you look for the book unless you tell me something more about it.
now this sc isn't acting meek, but isn't being rude or pushy or speaking in a tone of voice to belittle me. But she knows very little and expects me to figure out what her mom wants She then calls her mom.
sc: momma, what book is it?
kb: it's red! It's *blurgh blurgas* beauty book!
yes, I can hear the mother talking loud on the phone
me: ok, can you spell the name?
sc: momma, can you spell it?
kb: I don't need to spell it! I work for the City Police Department! Last time they were able to look up the name! I checked it out for six weeks last time! On the computer! I don't need to know how to spell it!!!
sc: *being pretty calm, really* ok...uh huh.
me: *thinking, well since we dont' catalog books by their colors* Well ma'm (to sc) you can look in this area for a red book.
sc: It's not my job to look for a book.
me: *asking scd2* do you know how to spell it?
    scd2: *shakes head*
    kb: bwah blargh argh!!!
oc: hi excuse me *very timidly* I don't want to butt in, but I know what you are looking for. *pulls out a copy of book* it's Babushka's Beauty Secrets: Old World Tips for a Glamorous New You . But this is my copy, I just checked it out.
me: oh great! Ok, let's go to the catalog and I can type in the title and place a hold. *to sc* ask your mother for her library card number. Thanks.
sc: momma do you have your library card?
kb: tell them to send it to Y library!
sc: can you give me your library card number.
kb: they can look it up!
sc just gives me her daughters number and it's placed on hold. yah.

Now we have 2 copies in the system, one due Feb 10, the other in March, since books can be renewed 2x and most people asked for that when they check out. So far, the one due Feb 10 has not been returned (surprise ). I decided to put a hold on it for myself, wanting to look at it, which, oh wow, means that when kb checks it out she can't request the normal 2 week check out to be extended for 6 weeks since there is another hold on it. Bet she is going to bring up that she works for the City PD when she's told that.

Forgot to mention, I latter talked to cw about sc. CW said sc couldn't find me, so she went down to get her. CW can't leave the front desk, so she called me, but she said sc was very insistant that cw should go up there looking for book. Now I don't know where sc got the partial call number. I assumed sc just asked cw where the beauty books were and cw gave her the partial number (the number is good for a general area, but not for a specific book). Cw, though, told me she didn't give sc a call number. Maybe the mother had it? Then again, sc's daughters had books from the kids room, so maybe cws from the kids room gave her the number?

Also, I hate other City departments throwing their weight around. I see people from other City departments coming in before we open and wanting to be served. Then kb expect us to what, bow down before her? Thinks we don't do our job unless it's for another City dept? Saying she's in the Police dept isn't "Open Seseme"; see if I tell a cop that pulls me over, "I'm with a City dept" give me slack.

Babushka's Beauty Secrets: Old World Tips for a Glamorous New You
I kind of have my doubts. Glamorous Babushka seems an oxymoron.

kb was just a simple old moron.

sc: It's not my job to look for a book.
Um, actually, yes it is your job to look for the book you want. Libraries are generally self-service; you look up the number yourself, you go to the shelf yourself, you take the book off the shelf yourself and check it out yourself. Librarians are there to help, but not to do all your work for you.

Obviously sc doesn't spend much time in a library. Too much high-falutin' readin', I reckon.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

C'mon, SC works for the [pause for trumpet fanfare] C*I*T*Y P*O*L*I*C*E D*E*P*A*R*T*M*E*N*T. All peons should be able to read her mind and divine her wishes without hesitation or confusion!

"Until you or your Mom helps us, it's simply going to stay on that shelf until a library patron gets it themselves. If you or your mom really wanted it, I would actually go over and get the book before a regular patron does. Otherwise you'll end up waiting longer."

I did notice that nowhere did she say she's actually a cop.

Probably sweeps the floor in the precinct house.
