So, because of the nature of the departure, their room is filled with expensive property.

That you describe the property as "expensive" makes me wonder if it wasn't stolen, and then traded for drugs.

Maybe you should talk to the Burglary Squad of your local PD and see if they want to check for serial numbers or other identifying information.

Especially if there is more than one of certain types of expensive property, like jewelry.

This thread just reminded me of something funny that happened years ago. Every so often the local police would use our hotel to train their drug sniffing dogs. They would plant the drugs through out the hotel for the dogs to find. One day when they were doing their training a guest happened to be smoking pot and the dog sniffed him out. (not that you have to be a specially trained dog to smell pot). Can you imagine his surprise when the cop and dog knocked on his door!

One would think they would impound everything there as evidence, however.

I imagine that the police only have so much room to impound stuff, and thus only take what they need for evidentiary purposes. Low end stuff will be given to the HK that found it after 3 months. I don't know what happens to high end stuff.

Well, yes, but since the room was occupied for more than a month, the room has to be deep cleaned anyway.

That sounds so negative. A way to make it sound more positive is, "They were relocated to more secure accommodations."

I guess my euphemisms weren't clear, they were arrested (involuntarily vacated) and put in jail (the less accommodating accommodations).

My husband's car got stolen a few years back, and when they recovered it, the cops took stuff that identified the thieves (who were not in the car when a tow truck driver caught the LoJack signal and picked it up). The cops took prescription drugs and a CD of photos. They left us 3 full duffel bags of personal possessions - clothes, shoes, blankets. I thought that was really weird too. Eventually we gave up on the cops wanting any of it and donated it to Goodwill.

They already executed the search warrant, and per the Officer, even searched the ceiling tiles, so I'm fairly sure that the personal belongings are free of illegal substances.

I wonder how that will work, or if the police will want to go through stuff as there could be drugs, evidence, stolen property, etc. I remember at my hotel we got a call from local police that one of our guests got arrested, for something like drunk and disorderly, and wasn't going to make his check-out time that morning, so I was sent to pack up his stuff and move it to storage.

Hee, I kinda want an update. I'm sure they're NOT going to be fun to deal with when they come back though; probably blame you guys for being arrested.
