This was the fourth assignment for our class. As far as I know, a native English speaker. Many of my students are underprepared, though, and come from impoverished backgrounds.Quoth Chanlin View PostI'm curious if this is your first assignment from him or not? Any indications he understands other lessons? Is his first language English?
As someone who is working on an education degree I understand some students just won't get it the first time around, but I have to wonder if some extenuating circumstance is at fault.
Teaching is such a delicate art. Some students just don't get it and never will -- maybe the subject just doesn't click with them, maybe there are circumstances that can't be overcome (such as illness or disability).
Some don't get it because of the teacher's style. I try to use a variety of approaches, but I know some of my students would do better with another prof.
I teach online, and some students just don't do well in that setting -- maybe their reading comprehension isn't where it should be, maybe they have trouble keeping themselves on task. All of my responses to Chris's questions were written, which meant Chris had to take the initiative to actually read them.
In my feedback on the assignment, I will once again reiterate what needs to be done. I'm thankful for a place like CS where I can vent and then go on and be professional at my job.

This was my other thought on it. As you said some students aren't as prepared as they think they are. I've had my fair share of interesting issues in my methods courses.Quoth Miss Fatale View Post-- maybe their reading comprehension isn't where it should be, maybe they have trouble keeping themselves on task. It just drives me nuts that so many people are apparently unfamiliar with the concept of contractions.
