Hmmm, so it IS a thing. It doesn't seem to be a common thing, though.

It's very common here. I always see bundles of green asparagus standing up in a shallow pan of water. The only time I don't see them in water is when they're on sale because they sell way too fast XD.

It's actually the recommended way of storing them to keep them fresher for days. A wet paper towel for the fridge works at home.

Yeah, same here in New England. Although sometimes it's really just on ice or something.

There could even be some validity to keeping asparagus in water. Unlike other veggies, asparagus still has its stem in tact. I would think keeping the stems in water would be as effective as keeping a bouquet of flowers in a vase of water.

I would also bet however that stores which choose not to do this simply sell out their asparagus more quickly. I'd also wonder how sanitary this practice of keeping asparagus in water is, too, as contaminants could get absorbed into the plant, making surface washing futile. I'm not a botanist, though, so I can't say if my concerns are justified.

All the stores in my area store them this way as well. I've never seen fresh asparagus that wasn't standing in a pan of shallow water in grocery stores. I'm in Atlantic Canada.

Our local grocery does that!

Makes for a nice warning not to be leaning over them when the sprayer goes off.

Well that would certainly be interesting! It'd help newbies, too. When my friend at work first started in produce, he'd be leaning over the shelf and then jump a mile when the misters went off on top of him It doesn't faze him now, but he said he always used to be afraid that it was some nasty customer spitting on him.

As for asparagus, ours is always just bundled with a rubber band and in a bin, no water.

I've seen cut celery sticks sold standing in small tubs of water. Never seen asparagus that way though.

They're always in a hurry, always don't have time to wait, but they sure do find the time to stop and complain

You know it! And they never want to talk to someone who can actually do something about the problem, they want to yell at the nametag-wearing, bottom-rung employee who has no authority and isn't even allowed to defend themselves against verbal bullying.

Okay, screw you all! This thread had jinxed me! After saying how I've never seen asparagus in water in my whole life, and it must be really uncommon around here, I went to the grocery store today, and what did I see?

One of the stores here plays a recording of "Singin' in the Rain" when they mist the veggies.

But yeah, I've never seen asparagus in water...stacked up in bundles, yes.

I've heard some stores play some kind of tune or soundbyte just before misting...cute (and helpful!)

When I first starting buying fresh asparagus I read how you should stand the stalks up straight with their ends in water when you get it home...but I haven't seen it in a store that way so far, either. So I guess I will see it that way in the next store I go to, huh?

No, it's usually a shallow pan. Just enough for the ends to be in water (an inch or so).

If I do my groceries on Monday and I happen to see them, I'll take a photo. Not all groceries stores here sell asparagus at this time.

the container is bigger than I would typically see.

When they're not on sale, they're in water. When they are on sale, they're usually not since they move too quickly. It's no different than using a wet paper towel or putting them in a glass of water at home when you're not going to cook them right away.
