  • Store 6, Mom 0, Son -25

So I was closing with my most awesome store manager ever (MASME) tonight and the following occurred:

He gets a call from a woman who states that her underage son has been using her debit card to buy beer from "S" at our store. She has the transaction dates, numbers, and amounts. She is understandably upset, and she's "calling the police to report you for selling minors beer". MASME tells her he needs to research it and will get back to her shortly.

He pulls the videotapes. There are 6 transactions. Of the 6, only one is handled by "S", the other 5 are all different cashiers. The son is buying such things as *one* candy bar, *one* drink, but in each and every transaction, gets the maximum amount of cash back. None of these transactions involve the purchase of beer.

MASME calls the woman back and tells her what he has found. She then states, "Oh I know what he is doing, he's getting cash back to buy pot." She states that her son has been in trouble before and she just KNEW he was doing something wrong.

Wait, what??? Your kid has a HISTORY of misbehaving and yet you're calling the police on US? Ooooh and by the way, you never ONCE complained about him using your card, just what he bought with it.

And dangnabbit "son" you're getting beer from somewhere other than us, but throwing us under the bus???????

I don't have any more words. Just WTF????????????

Did she still want to call the cops on the store after being told that or just before?

The son probably just told her it was beer to "lessen the offense".

Great parenting, Mommy Dearest. And throwing an innocent third party under the bus instead of dealing with the brat yourself; it's pretty blatantly obvious that the stupid apple doesn't fall far from the idiot tree here.

Six transactions, all with the maximum cash back, and he's using it to buy pot?

I'm not sure what the maximum is at your store, but considering that at most places I've seen it's $40-50.....that's a awful lot of pot.....

Well, one will eventually need money for snacks too, he's just planning ahead

At my store the max is $200...a lot of people will use their debit card to buy a soda or candy bar and then get the maximum cash back. When 3-4 people in a row decide to do this (really people, there's an ATM ten feet away!)

i doubt she was really calling the cops - i'm betting it was a bluff.

cos the last thing she wants is to have the cops involved... not if her son's doing pot.

If she did contact the police all they'd have to do is look at the store's video surveilance and that should remedy that issue right there.

But why go to the ATM and pay a $4-$5 foreign ATM fee (counting both the ATM's fee and your bank's fee) when you can get the cash back at your register for free?

If anything the people who use your ATM for $200 or less and pay an expensive fee when they can get it at the register for free are the stupid ones!

But that does seem to be the newest method of parenting - blame someone else. Or maybe that's the way it's always been done by the SC's.

The OP works for the same company as me. And our company lowered its cashback limit to $20 last year. So the max he can get in one transaction is $20.

I'm willing to bet that the SC did not really "know" what the kid was buying or from whom, and claimed beer and that she'd be calling the cops just to get the OP's manager to do all the legwork. She can now go back and confront her kid with third party verified facts and further question him as to what the money is/was for.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

Thats some good stuff there, if he was getting it all for pot.

                              I hate that limit
