The ripped off a piece of the strip labels that we have especially printed and shipped to the store. I don't know if it's because there were no pulltags or salespeople around, but since when is it ok to rip apart signage? In order to get the 3 pricepoints, they had to dig in their nails and pull the labelholder apart. Then they brought the 3 barcodes to me and expected me to just ring them up. These were ginormous baby furniture items. They said they "checked" and knew we had the items. Who knows what this meant. But we've had instances where the cashier scanned barcodes, only to find that we don't have or even carry the item, and thus create the hassle of refunding hundreds of dollars (which doesn't credit to the customer's card right away.) So I told them, "We have to have the items brought up here. I can't just scan the barcode." I know my tone was a bit sucky because I was annoyed they'd ripped our shelf label out, and I kind of feel bad. I just hate when people do stuff like that.

This of course leads to the inevitable "I am a longtime customer", "but other store let me do that", and/or "get me a manager"."Employees can make or break any business, so treat them with respect. I wouldn't feel bad in the least. In what universe would it be correct to take the attached label off a shelf? In the history of mankind, has there ever been a store that wanted customers to take an attached label off the shelf? Cashiers scan eiither the item you're buying, or some sort of clearly labeled "take this tag to cashier" type tag. Not the frickin' attached to the shelf tag. If you don't see the item or one of those tags, get an employee. Don't rip apart displays.Quoth Food Lady View Post

Yeah, don't feel bad - any sympathy you have would be lost on anyone dumb enough to do that.
Madness takes it's toll....

My company's small-town stores have the right idea; the shelf label is inserted in a plastic strip that runs along the bottom of the shelf. To remove the label, you either need a special tool or long fingernails.
In my store, the shelf labels are attached right to the shelf and are so ghetto-cheap it's practically impossible to peel the label off in one piece.Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard. Be evil.
