  • Photos, Threats & Chicken - Worst Day of My Life!

It was a VERY rough day. There is a *ick-*il-A in my mall. I was on-duty ALONE. For 6 HOURS dealing with thousands of people lining-up for the ‘support the company’ day. It was like Chernobyl, D-Day and an attack by Godzilla all rolled into one.

I’ve never been made to feel so horrible in my entire life. Remember that I'm a Security Officer in a Mall and have been for 7 years.

Every mall I’ve worked at since 9/11 has had a ‘no photography/no video’ policy. If a store is doing something for their own marketing, or a store allows photography/filming within their lease line, that’s fine. But in the public area of the mall, it’s a no go. It’s posted on signs at every entrance. It’s harder now with cell phones, but it’s obvious when someone is taking a photo with one.

Due to the celebratory nature of this event, it seemed nearly EVERY person in line was taking photos, tweeting, facebooking, etc. Since the line was in the public area, guess who had to speak with hundreds of shutterbugs? (The store manager also made forays through the line, requesting people to adhere to mall rules, be courteous and not take photos)

I think at least 30 people threatened to sue me. At least 3 claimed to be lawyers. I tried to explain the situation to them thusly when they asked “why can’t I take pictures?” I explained that because it is private property, we have rules we have to enforce for everyone’s safety, security and privacy, for both employees and customers. The majority seemed to get it. The rest verbally assaulted me regarding me withholding their constitutional rights/first amendment/etc. I had men hiss in my face how they were good (insert religion here) and that I should be supporting them. Others said it was illegal, despite my AGAIN pointing out that it is private property, and explaining that if you invited someone to your house and asked them to take off their shoes or they would have to leave, and they refused, then you would make them leave, correct? They STILL insisted it was public property. So I tried explaining how private property can be open to the public, but under the condition that you have to follow set rules. Still others claimed ‘well you didn’t stop HIM/HER from taking pictures!!’ though I could only catch so many people and could only be in one spot at one time. Still didn’t work. I think the main gripe was that I was stopping them from doing something that they WANTED to do, period. I had to escort one man out, as he was trying to rile-up the crowd after being told to stop taking photos. Another man began videotaping me as I explained the policy, ignored me when I asked him to please stop, then refused to erase the tape when I explained that he, in attempting to support one right, violated my right to privacy when I told him I did not want to be filmed. He scoffed and left, so I have NO clue where my impromptu interview may end-up. The crowd also drew people trying to distribute flyers, pamphlets and so-on of various natures, which we also don’t allow.

For the most part, people took it well once the rule was explained to them. The problem was with those stubborn ones who REFUSED to believe that we’ve always had this rule and were convinced that we were trying to squash public support for the store. I’ve already been searching online and have found a dozen articles/blogs and tweets about ‘some security guard/mall cop/power hungry bitch thirsty for authority’ DARING to tell them what to do. They are not very flattering. It makes me feel so bad. I was not monitoring them due to my beliefs, which I did not inject into the situation at all. I was only doing my job in the capacity that the company expected of me, and that was to uphold their rules regardless of my personal beliefs and feelings. At least a few apologized for the trouble I was having and actually helped me understand better that they were supporting the freedom to believe what we want and our freedom to say it, and did not have an anti-anything attitude. That was refreshing, and a point I hadn’t looked at the situation from. At least those few thank-yous took the sting away somewhat. But in a situation like that there just doesn't seem to be any way to win.

ANy "I pay muh taxes!" people?

I always got them when I had to man a barricade and re direct traffic, seems they always believed that they had the right to drive anywhere because they paid their taxes, and therefore, had the right to use any public street....

Taxes or no taxes, your car is going to fall into that 8 foot hole where they tore up the sewer line if I let you drive past me, Sir. That's why I'm here.

Looking back, I'm glad I worked security before everyone had a means to post their version of how I had violated their rights on the internet............

When will people learn that being rude to people who are doing their job while protesting / supporting a cause is not going to win over anyone and weakens the cause?
Don't let them make you feel bad.
I only kind of know how you feel - having to stop 1000 parents from taking pictures of their little tutu'd darlings while standing in the aisle, on seats, hanging over balcony railings. My response to "but you didn't make him/her stop!" was always - 'cause I didn't catch them but I caught you - now get down from there stop taking pictures and return to your seat - or would you like to explain to your little darling why you couldn't see the rest of her dance because you were being physically removed from the building?

I'm sorry you had to deal with those douche bags. You didn't deserve all that crap. Same at Casino's you can't tape and you can't take pics in certain locations (i.e. The tables or at the cage) and people get pissed about it.

I hate it when there's a ring leader who tries to rile up a crowd that you've just calmed. Well, I think you're awesome for handling all that crap, screw all those jerks!

Ah the good old "why are you picking on ME?" defense. Guess what Sparky, if I'd caught them doing it I'd be in their face too; unfortunately for you and me, they were actually paying attention & saw me coming.

I love the fact that there was all the picture and video taking. Its like the Freedom Riders man... except... with chicken... and in an air conditioned mall.

Did they sing, "We shall overcome (the chicken)?" Are they organizing a million chicken sandwich march? When the national guard comes out to suppress their protest, will they walk around shoving chicken nuggets into the barrels of their rifles?

This is HISTORY in the making, I need a picture of me standing in line at the Kenosha Mall's Chik-Fil-A!

Oh, and if those jerks really were lawyers... well, you know where that's going. It's so delightful when they break the law (claiming to be a lawyer) when they are trying to break rules and you won't let them.
I wondered afterwards if I should have asked for business cards

                  Or at least a name.

Perhaps next time there is some kind of big rally the mall should invest in requesting a few uniformed officers to be around to keep an eye on things.

You should not have had to deal with that all by yourself.

Here's a friendly reminder to keep things on track folks. This is a discussion about people acting like assholes in a fast food joint and taking out their angst on the crew, not about laws, ethics, or rights. Please do not get LillFily's thread shut down, she has a right to discuss her crappy day at work.

Wow, amazing how many people feel rules don't apply to them & them only, and you have to deal with them being jerks over it.

I have to admit, haven't been to malls much in the past few years, I wasn't aware of the no photography rules that I guess must be getting common. Back when my daughter was young, there was always something going on at the mall, and taking a photo of her with whatever costumed mascot was wandering around, or involved in a store or mall sponsored activity was the norm.

I can understand someone being dissapointed not to be able to take photos, especially of kids activities & things like that, but their feelings shouldn't be taken out on security people trying to politely enforce the rules they were hired to enforce.

                      Madness takes it's toll....
                      Please have exact change ready.

[sarcasm] All they wanted to do was show their farcebook friends (who might number in the 5s) that they were "part of the effort," and "supporting the cause." [/sarcasm]

The mall itself might not support the Chick-fil-a stance. Nor might many of the other businesses. The customers don't give a damn about those companies' "right to free speech" and not be associated, even in pictures with this event. If the mall didn't try to enforce it's rules about photography, it could very well lose business.. as in the business of the companies that lease space from it.

I gotta agree with an earlier comment. Upon seeing the size of the crowd, the mall should have requested a few officers to come help out, be they off duty or not. And LF should not have been serving alone for this. A crowd this size is a problem, even if they were the nicest group of people ever! And given that as LF said, some of them weren't so nice...

*sends LF a fuzzy purring blanket and a fire hose for Friday*
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I'm you had to put up with that crap LillFilly...all I can really say is try to not take it personally (easier said than done, I know....). People are idiots and don't understand that you're just doing your job and enforcing existing rules.

And I'm also sorry about this, but I have to close down the thread. People were not listening to repeated mod warnings about staying out of Fratching territory. Don't worry LillFilly, it's not your fault.
