  • Attention Shoplifters!

Attention illegal goods grabbers. Just because you gave all the stuff you stole to one person in the group to put in her bag, and all left together, does NOT mean you don't all get arrested because "the stuff wasn't on us when you caught us!"

    That is all.

The sad thing is, the person making the argument was the mother of two of the teens, and neighbor of the one they had putting stuff in her purse. Oh, and she's going to sic her lawyer on us too!

that reminds me of a letter that a mother wrote to PFB. Her daughter was only the lookout, so she couldn't be charged with shoplifting.

I bet the one holding is saying, "I can't be arrested, I'm not the one who put the items in my bag!"

This is the same logic that people have been known to use when caught with pot. "It's not mine, I'm holding it for a friend." That may be true. And that may fly with the parents. But legally speaking, it carries as much weight as a stray dog's political aspirations.

For some reason, I'm thinking of that Gord story, wherein someone snags a game and takes off running out the door. The Gord being who He is, gives chase. When the thief realizes he can't outrun The Gord, tosses away the game and tries to beg off.

The Gord whupped his ass, dragged him back to the store, and called the cops. And justice was served.

You see this on Cops (the TV show) all the time. One tried to claim the drugs in his pocket weren't his, oh no--see, he'd just bought the pants at a thrift shop, and the stuff must have been in there when he bought them.

My brother had a claim of "It's not mine/I didn't know it was there" once involving his car and a baggie of illicit substance. No charges were filed, but not until after my brother had spent a month in jail because his now-former best friend was a weasel-hearted coward.

A school principal I know would get that threat a lot from outraged parents (whose kids got punished for something). His reply was to look them right in the eye and very quietly state, "You know, we have lawyers too."

They'd deflate really fast. It was as if it never entered their pointy little heads that other people might have lawyers.

"I didn't put that there!" plus "I wasn't carrying it!" equals two criminals rather than none... When will they ever learn?

I remember one ep. where a guy had baggie of 32 crack rocks in his drink cup. Of course, he must have picked up the wrong one from the tray; cop asked, "what, the owner of the cup didn't notice you picked up his cup?"

Something similar happened to me once. I loaned my car to a friend (someone who I'd thought was a friend, at any rate). It was returned the next day - full of trash and the tank nearly empty. As I was cleaning it out, several police cruisers pulled up in front of the house - oh, look, search warrants.

The officers searched the car and came up with a baggie that had a small amount of weed in it. The was a warrant to search the house, too, but they found nothing there.

Yup, arrested, cuffed, hauled downtown, booked, questioned, released O/R.
The reason for the warrant was the car had been identified by undercover officers. Anyway, it was looking like I was going to have a felony possession rap for a while. I'm told they did question him about whether he'd been driving the car that night, but he denied it. My word against his, and whose car was it? And where did they find the contraband?

There was a happy ending to this, though. The case got dismissed on a procedural quibble. And it gets happier still - a few months after all this, I learned that my 'friend' had gotten himself arrested for possession with intent to traffic, or something along those lines, plus a couple of other miscellaneous charges. How did I find this out? Guess who he called to throw his bail. G'wan, guess. While you're at it, see if you can guess what my answer was. Give ya a hint - it rhymes with 'smell snow'.

Yup, that's me - just a great big idiot with no memory, right?
