  • Yeah and Monkeys Might Fly Out of My Butt

Hey all!! I've only made one post on here before and by this point it was years ago. (Mods, feel free to move this thread if I'm in the wrong spot.) Since then, I've been trying to break into customs and commissions for people. And now, suddenly, I've already encountered a potential SC. I say potential because I doubt they'd even put a price forward.

I've been trying to break into making, among other such things, fursuits and fursuit parts for anyone interested. A while back I had someone ask me to make them a head, only to have them disappear off the face of the planet once I tried to get hold of them when it was finished. I'm quite pleased with it too.

Anyway, I've posted it on a local forum, trying to generate some interest and so far, no buyers yet. I have asked a pretty damn reasonable price for it as well, $250. So far I've gotten no offers, but I have had two replies on the thread, one of them being this particular gem:

Maybe spice up the deal with a possible matching tail and hand paws. feet upon commission

I had to restrain myself from posting a tirade about the price. Why? Because well built, good-looking heads along can go for $500 and up ON THEIR OWN. This person is suggesting that I build a partial for whoever buys it, for less money than the fur ALONE would cost me.

The kicker? This is one of the local artists who does artwork on commission. So much for artists understanding the value of the work.

Not to be confused with the garden variety artist, who just wants to create, this vile creature tries to make themselves out to be gods gift to everything....

I haven't really noticed that the artist community has any smaller concentration of greedy, self-centered, ass-munches than the general populace. Only, sometimes the asshole artist will try to use their "relationship" as a fellow artist to be even more entitled. >_<

Sadly, this is likely the commission that leads you to get 50% up front. I've learned that lesson many, many times.

That artist though needs a swift kick to the wallet. Everything changes when its your own $$ on the line.

As near as I can figure, she's one of the younger artists who does commissions as a way to make quick pocket change, rather than because she's making a living off of it. This pretty much prevents them from understanding that, to actually survive, you need to sell your work for a specific amount. And it's annoying as balls.

I imagined Wayne speaking when I read your title.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

Came here to see if the monkeys would appear, was sadly disappointed.

...or am I grateful? I don't know right now.

huh. forgive me if I make the entire wrong assumption, as my skill with things is nowhere near good enough to ever charge anyone for my repairs, but if she's a hobbyist who's good enough to sell, why would she need someone to make her own stuff? would she be re-selling yours?

It's not an uncommon thing to do in the fandom. Buying from other artists, I mean. Usually it's a good way to learn how to do something yourself if you're on the costume-making side of it. Or sometimes you just really like a particular style someone works in or maybe you don't have the time or materials to make it yourself. In this person's case, she's a drawing artist rather than a suit-making artist. This means she either does not understand the amount of time and effort something like this takes or she doesn't care.

Sounds like this one values THEIR work -- at least somewhat, given the followup comments -- just not anybody else's.

ah, I see. Nobody in our area creates anything along those lines, our con group tends to make things as one giant group, so I wasn't sure how that worked for most.
