Opposite side of the world, he's completely oblivious, in fact.
Oblivious to everything. I'm on the opposite side of the world and I know about Sandy!

BTW: few of you who are affected by Sandy are able to read this by now, but may Luck be with you today/tonight.

    1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

on the bright side, when sandy starts dropping jellyfish instead of rain or snow, we'll all know where Seraph lives.
Well, so far the only Enemy of Normalcy thing was that right after someone had commented to me that they were surprised how calm the wind was being...I opened my umbrella and BAM! Huge gust of wind ripped the umbrella right out of my hands and down the street.

Just out of curiosity, do you also post in r/talesfromtech support on Reddit under a different username because I just saw your story there word for word
      Yeppers, that's me. <.<

Do you really need the money from this guy? Cause if that weren't the case, I'd be highly tempted to go "Here's your money, don't contact me again you're blacklisted." Because unless you really need the money, he doesn't sound worth it.

Its really bad for us right now...so...yeah. We had some really, really expensive medical expenses hit us last month that drained our finances. I've been working myself to pieces, lol.

Just for the love of god, stay away from anything electrical while this storm is happening, knowing you, you're bound to so something to yourself!

indeed, in this age of connectivity, you should know about the major storms from anywhere, no matter where you are if you've got the internet, doubly so if you have someone working for you there.

On an unrelated note, stay safe!
Yeah but this means nothing in EW-world. In EW world you can work without power. Pilots can fly through hurricanes (PFB already has their first "why didn't you fly" letter up!) Vacations and time off are for them and no one else who provides them service. And people can be yelled for not having an immediate turn-around even if the customer is the cause for the delay... in fact even pointing out that the customer was the problem isn't allowed. Cos it's EW-World.

There was a customer at my store yesterday who was talking about how Sunday (the massive, insanely busy 'zomgstormHALP' day) was a holiday Couldn't figure out if they meant in terms of crowded-store-and-people-buying-shit, or 'holiday' in the sense that SHE had to wait in a long line (yeah, you and 157,942 other customers) so we were all goofing off.

Waiting out any sort of severe weather event is NOT a HOLIDAY!

And yes, anyone who worked that day - including people who genuinely had to, such as hospital staff, residential care staff, emergency services of all sorts (including electricians etc) and meteorologists - deserves extra reward.

And anyone who doesn't fall into 'genuinely had to' but whose bosses tried to make them - or used effective coercion - deserves to take the reward straight out of their bosses' hide. Or pay packet. Whichever they prefer.

My mom's planning to write a letter to Corporate about how everyone at my store who worked those two days (not just me) deserves some sort of reward...she's figuring out how to get the term 'monetary bonus' across without actually saying it. Not having worked during the last storm panic, I didn't realize exactly what I was getting into when I agreed to that shift change.

Sunday is time-and-a-half anyway, but coming to work during a declared state of emergency--Monday--deserves additional compensation...I almost got blown into the street and hit by a car on the way in and nobody knew if anything (flood from water on the roof, power failure, etc) would happen to the store while we were there. If something did happen, although I was the de facto keyholder from 9-close, I didn't have 'proper' training (SM was there, but two people regardless of training would not be able to deal effectively with anything major).

Being called into work during a declared state of emergency should be subject to criminal charges.

The ONLY people who should be working during a state of emergency are the ones whose absence would put lives and/or safety at risk. And if at all possible, there should be enough present at the place of work for full shifts and proper rest breaks for the entire expected duration of the emergency; even if break rooms or other spaces become dormitories.

When I am queen of the world, every hospital, residential care home, ambulance centre, fire centre, police station, SES (state emergency services) centre, etc, will have such a dorm; and with extra space so they can also act as central locations for emergency-rated electricians & other essentials to bunk down in during an S.O.E.
I know all these people would prefer to be with their families, but they knew what they were getting into when they chose their professions. And they'll be a lot safer NOT travelling during the state of emergency than they would be otherwise - and if there's enough present for full shifts, that'll reduce overwork/overstrain.
And yes, firefighters, ambulance drivers, and other 'might have to travel in the disaster' types will have 'I'm not driving in that' power of veto. Yes, this can mean they arrive too late for some folks; but it's better than losing the first responder as well as the patient.

And calling in non-essential personnel during an SOE just to keep your business running WILL be cause for criminal negligence and wilful potential manslaughter charges.

                        ....

Anyway, I'm angry for all of you who were called in to work during this crap, and who aren't essential personnel.
For those of you who chose to be essential personnel: good onya, mate. Thanks.

Apparently, we were one of the few stores (if not the ONLY store) in our region that had consistent power O_o Even SM didn't know why we were told to stay open...probably some inane sales-numbers thing. Like anyone would be out shopping. Hell, the cops were doing drivebys of all area businesses and were surprised we were open. There are only two days the store is actually closed, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Actually, they already have this veto in all the areas I'm familier with. The first rule of any rescue is not to create more victims. Emergancy responders have the right to wait if conditions are not safe for them. It is generally done on their own reading of the situation, and many will do dangerous things in the name of lifesaving, because that's what they do. But the option to wait for backup, or for conditions to clear is an option.

indeed... i somewhat thought it was illegal to be on the roads if an official 'state of emergency' was called - except for necessary travel. (i.e. emergency travel, people going to work in vital positions - LEOs, medical, etc).
