This incident happened at one of the parking garages I work at last Friday. The parking rate is $3.00 minimum & $12.00 maximum. The $3.00 minimum is for the first hour. The $12.00 maximum is after 3 hours. For every 20 minutes or a fraction thereof after the first hour it is $1.50. There is no early bird parking. My current supervisor has been over the garage since the beginning of the year.
Female customer pulls up the the cashier booth & gives me her ticket. I enter the time on the ticket into the cash register. The display on the cash register reads $12.00 & 3 hours 40 minutes. So I tell her what her parking fee is. Here is what happened.
me: "It will be $12.00"
female customer: "$12.00!!?? The last time I parked here I only paid $6.00."
me: "The display on the cash register indicates that you were here for 3 hours and 40 minutes & that you owe $12.00"
female customer: "But the last time I parked her, & I parked before 8 a.m., I only paid $6.00"
me: "There is no early bird parking. That was taken away a while ago. Plus there is no sign out front indicating $6.00 for parking, & so we cannot charge you $6.00"
female customer: "But the last time I came her, & it was before 8 a.m., I only paid $6.00"
me: "When was that?"
female customer: "2 months ago"
me: ...
female customer: "Fine, I will pay $12.00, but this is the last time I am parking here. I want a receipt."
me: ...
She hands me the $12.00. I process the transaction, & I give her a receipt. She leaves.
If she wants a $6.00 refund, she will have to ask my current supervisor. Whether or not he gives her a $6.00 refund remains to be seen.
