My mom and I just returned from a week-long road trip (and ferry) from VA to Lake Geneva, WI. BG: my mom is in a wheelchair, cannot wallk or stand but does drive with hand controls, and is pretty darn independent. end BG:
Everywhere we went, including the five hotels/resort we stayed in, the ferry across Lake Michigan, and pretty much everyone everywhere was helpful, and friendly. I'm from NJ, and while not trying to generalize, I've found people in other parts of the US to be a lot friendlier than some of my fellow NJ-isans.
Traveling with my mom can be challenging, logistically, but we have learned to improvise when needed. While it was a long trip, and I'm not sure I want to do it again, it was made that much easier with everyone we encountered.
PS: the lake express ferry rocks!
